Wednesday 13 is an American horror punk band that was formed in 2004. It was named after the pseudonym of the singer and guitarist Wednesday 13 .
Career
Wednesday 13 was active as a singer with the Murderdolls after the Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 . When this group took a longer break, also because leading band members had other musical commitments, Wednesday 13, who names Alice Cooper and Kiss as main influences, went on the "Graveyard A Go-Go" solo tour of Great Britain in March 2004 . Death Becomes You acted as a backing band . After his return to the USA, Wednesday 13 in June 2004 started looking for musicians for a real band that should bear his name.
The former Frankenstein Drag Queens guitarist Ikky joined the band as guitarist . However, it was replaced by Piggy D after just a few months in September 2004. Kid Kid was part of the troupe as bass player, while Ghastly played the drums. In November 2004 they went on the Look What The Bats Dragged In tour through Europe.
On April 12, 2005, Wednesday 13's first solo album, Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, and the Dead , was released on Roadrunner Records . A video was made for "I walked with a zombie", which is heavily based on the horror film Night of the Living Dead . Another video was shot for the song "Bad Things". Thorsten Wilms, singer of the German horror punk band The Other and co-founder of the Fiend Force Records label, praised the record in Ox-Fanzine . Wednesday 13 thus “exceeded everything that he has published so far”. One should " forget the Murderdolls , because alone he is unbeatable". According to him, Transylvania 90210 would be a "top-class horror album".
Before the recordings for the second album Wednesday 13 broke up with Roadrunner Records and signed with Rykodisc . This second album was released on September 12, 2006 with Fang Bang . Wednesday 13 played the guitar on this album in addition to the vocals. A video was made for "My Home Sweet Homicide". Compared to its predecessor, this album sounds faster and happier, each song is inspired by a theme from the horror genre (film and literature). The album should deliberately differ from the previous album and also the sound of the Murderdolls .
In 2006 Piggy D left the band to join Rob Zombie as bassist and was replaced by Murderdolls bassist Eric Griffin . In the same year Brix Milner switched to bass for Kid Kid and ex- dope drummer Racci Shay joined the band for Ghastly. With this new line-up, the band went on tour again.
From October to November 2007 Staci Grim and Joe Letz briefly replaced Griffin and Shay on guitar and drums respectively. The latter plays for Combichrist today . Milner was replaced on bass by Nate Manor in 2006, Griffin by J-Sin Trioxin a year later. From January to June 2008, Murderdolls guitarist Acey Slade was part of Wednesday 13.
The third studio album of Wednesday 13 is called Skeletons and was released in the USA on April 29, 2008 after a large-scale promotion on MySpace . The album was distributed there by Wednesday 13 without a record label and exclusively in the stores of the Hot Topic chain. In Europe, Skeletons hit stores on May 12, 2008, distributed by the DR2 Records label . According to Wednesday 13, this album was designed to be harder, more aggressive and darker than its predecessor.
At the same time the EP Bloodwork was released with six other tracks. Bloodwork should only be available as a download . The release of Blood Work was usually one month after Skeletons planned by accident but released EP and album simultaneously. The band decided to continue selling on the Internet; however, the EP was also sold as a CD on the subsequent tour and was then regularly released. Raccy Shay was replaced by Johnny Chops in 2008.
At the end of 2008 Wednesday 13 released their first live CD / DVD entitled Fuck It, We'll Do It Live . This is a recording of a 2008 concert in Allentown , Pennsylvania . According to Wednesday 13, nothing was reworked, the pieces should sound exactly like a live concert: “If we make a mistake, you will hear it. If my voice cracks, you hear it. This is as close to a live experience as we could give. ”The title of the live album refers to a quote from the presenter Bill O'Reilly . In a conversation with SF Weekly magazine , Wednesday 13 also commented on the current band constellation, with which he is very satisfied. He has seen many members of the band come and go over the years for a variety of reasons, but there have often been jealousies and creative differences.
According to their own statements, the band is much more popular in Europe, especially in England, where the largest fan base is located, than in their home country.
In June 2009 Wednesday 13 announced the formation of the new band Gunfire 76 . He started this together with Todd Youth, formerly guitarist with Danzig and Samhain , today with Son of Sam . The group Wednesday 13 paused temporarily because Wednesday 13 wanted to dedicate itself to a different musical style with Gunfire 76 . At the end of 2009 it was announced via social media like Twitter and Facebook that Joey Jordison and Wednesday 13 were working on a new Murderdolls album, which was then released in 2010 under the name "Women and Children Last". The band was starred with Roman Surman, Jack Tankersly and Racci Shay recruited. The reasons for the new line-up are not known, but Roman Surman was previously active as a roadie for Wednesday 13 for several years, and has taken over the part of the guitar at Gunfire 76, which he offered to replace Acey Slade for the Murderdolls, Jack Tankersly, who previously worked for Bullets and Octan, switched to Wednesday13 immediately after the joint tour with Gunfire 76 and the Murderdolls and Racci, who had to leave the band in 2008 due to a bereavement, joined again in 2010. With the Murderdolls, two European tours were denied in the course of time, before they disbanded again in 2013. Wednesday 13 took over the Murderdolls line up and integrated it into his main band, except for the difference that Jack Tankersly switched from bass to rhythm guitar and Tryo Doebbler joined the band as the new bass player.
In October 2011 the current studio album called Calling All Corpses was released . In 2012 an EP called Spook & Destroy was released with new recordings, remixes and two new titles. In 2013 a follow-up album with the title "The Dixie Dead" was released, which musically resembles the two albums Transylvania 90210 and Fang Bang. In 2014 the unplugged album "Undead" was released, which contains Wednesday's greatest hits in acoustic versions as well as a 4 CD compilation called Dead Meat 10 years of blood, feathers and lipstick, which contains remixed versions of many of his songs as well as various demo recordings and unreleased material. In 2015 the 6th studio album Monsters of the Universe was released and celebrated its big hit with the release of the song "Keep Watching the Sky".
Wednesday 13 announced that he would release his seventh studio album in spring 2017, under the name "Condolences" (German Beileid / Beileidsbekundung), he wants to produce the album together with Chris "Zeuss" Harris, who already worked with him on "Women and Children Last "worked. The album was announced for June 2, 2017. The singles "What the night brings" and "Blood Sick" with accompanying videos were released beforehand.
style
music
Musically, the music group Wednesday 13 moves between the genres of horror punk and metal . In addition to the rough, scratchy voice of Wednesday 13, the high memorability of the vocal melodies and the often simple song structures are characteristic. Ballads are only occasionally found on the group's albums. Skeletons offers harder and darker tones than the previous albums. The entire music is written by the singer Wednesday 13 alone.
Poetry
The texts are strongly influenced by popular horror films and B-movies from the zombie film genre. For example, each song on Fang Bang is about a different horror film. Word games, irony, black humor and sarcasm often find their way into the lyrics of the band. This is especially the case on the band's first two albums. Wednesday 13 commented on the lyrics as follows: “I love the exaggerated and the humor. Take a band like AFI , which I really appreciate, but I always lack the humor in them. Even with the Misfits , I always missed the joke, which made me wonder how serious you can be when singing about teenagers from Mars. My songs should be weird and crazy, so that you can laugh at the bizarre lyrics. "
Skeletons is far more personal and is partly about Wednesday life and more serious issues like depression and alcoholism . Wednesday 13 said: “I wrote Skeletons at a time when I was continually drunk. I sat in my room, drank Jack Daniels and Coke and recorded song ideas until five in the morning. In the morning I no longer knew what I had composed and was very surprised when I listened to the serious lyrics. The words were honest and spontaneous and came from deep inside me. Maybe because I almost unconsciously absorbed it through the alcohol. I felt more and more like I was falling into a deep black hole and became more and more uncontrolled. Reading my texts also kind of scared me. So the album basically saved me. "
Like the music, the lyrics are only written by Wednesday 13th.
