history

The Weifberg ("Weif Bg.") North of Hinterhermsdorf, representation of the Oberreit map from 1821/22

Pastor Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger , the developer of Saxon Switzerland , recommended in 1804 in his book Schandau and its surroundings or description of so-called Saxon Switzerland a visit to Weifberg, which was then still unwooded and covered by fields, "to enjoy a magical view" . In the period that followed, the first tourists visited the mountain.

In 1882 the Gebirgsverein Hinterhermsdorf wanted to have a lookout tower built on the mountain , but were able to raise only 200 marks instead of the budgeted funds of 700 marks. In the 1950s, the border police erected a watchtower on the summit, but it was not open to the public.

Weifberg Tower

Today's wooden observation tower was opened on November 2, 2000. The numerous visitors reach the viewing platform at a height of 32.4 meters via ten stairs with a total of 173 steps. The tower has a diameter of 6.4 meters. The top of its octagonal roof protrudes 36.9 meters above the summit of the Weifberg. In addition to the tower, the Weifberg also has a refuge.

In 2015 it became known that the Weifberg Tower was in need of renovation, as many parts of the wooden tower were badly weathered or damaged. The renovation, which cost around € 360,000, took place in the summer of 2018. Weather-resistant larch wood was used for replacement wood parts instead of the previous spruce wood. The rest area at the foot of the tower has been redesigned and an adventure trail for children has been installed as a knowledge quiz within the tower ascent.
