Weinstrasse 31

The house at Weinstrasse 31 in the Palatinate country town of Deidesheim is a building in which a restaurant was located for many centuries. It is also known as the “Gasthaus zur Kanne”. It is considered a cultural monument worthy of protection according to the Monument Protection Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The house is located in the center of Deidesheim on the German Wine Route , only a few meters from here to the market square. Diagonally opposite are the city's historic town hall and the historic “Zum Schwanen” inn . The south is café and guest house of Deidesheimer Hospital .

history

The “jug” on the right edge of the picture, drawn by Heinrich Strieffler (1905). The innkeeper at the time, Adolf Schäffer, sold this picture as a postcard.
Before it was converted into a vinotheque, there was a reference to the house's long history on the facade.

The original building on this site was built in the 12th century. At first it belonged to the Eusserthal monastery and served as a hostel for travelers passing through. The hostel was given as a long lease from 1374 , since then all owners and hosts can be proven by means of documents. The building was first mentioned in 1400 as the “Zum Krug” inn, and in 1532 as the “Zur Kanne” inn. Presumably the building went into private ownership during the Reformation . For a long time it had the sole right to drink beer in Deidesheim and, with some interruptions, often due to the war, served as an inn. The original building was destroyed in 1689 in the Palatinate War of Succession , in which Deidesheim was almost completely burned down, and was later rebuilt.

In 1951 the house was taken over by the "Kannengesellschaft" under Albert Bürklin ( Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse ) and Karl-Horst Brune ( Mannheim ). The inn "Zur Kanne" was considered the oldest inn in the Palatinate , but the catering business was closed on June 13, 2016. From December 6, 2016, the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf has a vinotheque here for a while . The building is currently empty.

building

The current building was rebuilt in 1710 on the remains of the old building and rebuilt in 1731. The division inside the building as well as its entrance originate from structural changes in 1876. The building is a two-storey plastered building from the late Baroque period , the typical features of which have been retained despite later modifications. It has a mansard gable roof that is covered with beaver tails .
