The name of the street goes back to the chapel of St. Wendelinus , built in 1369 , which was located on Wendelsplatz. In 1394, right next to the chapel with the "Born behind St. Wendelin", the first Frankfurt fountain , the so-called Bettelbrunnen, was created, the source of which was on Wendelsweg.

Villa Henninger

In 1869 a brewery settled east of the lower section of the Wendelsweg , which was named Henninger Bräu in 1874 when it was taken over by Heinrich Henninger . Soon afterwards, the construction of Villa Henninger began, which was completed in 1875 and is located at number 64 on Wendelsweg.

Bruno Schubert later acquired the brewery and moved into Villa Henninger, where his wife gave birth to all eight sons that had emerged from the marriage. In 1928, at her request , Max Beckmann, a friend of Mrs. Schubert, painted an oil painting entitled Der Wendelsweg in Frankfurt am Main , in which - not true to detail - the Villa Henninger and part of the Wendelsweg are depicted.

Villa Schubert

Ownership of the brewery and Villa Henninger later passed to the eldest son, Bruno H. Schubert. In the mid-1950s, he had a villa built in the 1.7 hectare park, which is now known as the “Schubert Garden”, which can hardly be seen from the street. It was completed in 1956 and is known today as Villa Schubert. The entrance to Villa Schubert is under number 70, the Schubert garden extends over the entire property area (numbers 64 to 70).

Even after the brewery, including the property, was sold to Reemtsma in 1980, Schubert kept the two villas. While he continued his center of life in the Villa Schubert (in which he had a lifelong right of residence), he, who had already been appointed Consul General of Chile in 1952, established the Honorary Consulate General of Chile in the Villa Henninger . Both objects have been declared cultural monuments. Nevertheless, permission has now been given to demolish the listed Villa Schubert. This led to corresponding resentment in the neighborhood and a citizens' initiative was formed to try to prevent the destruction of the historically significant villa (the receptions of the Frankfurt honorary citizen Schubert are "to be regarded as an extraordinary tradition in Frankfurt"). After all, Schubert's former - and now sold - oak dining table is considered "the most famous Frankfurt table". Here he accommodated guests like Niki Lauda . The entire site has belonged to Actris since 1999 , which is managed by Daniel Hopp, the son of SAP co- founder Dietmar Hopp . The company plans to build 800 apartments on the approximately nine hectare site, the square meter prices of which are expected to be between 3,400 and 6,000 euros.

Trivia

  • The Wendelsweg connected the Frankfurt Mainfurt directly with Dieburg , the capital of the Civitas Auderiensium .
  • Wendelsweg was one of the original locations in the 2012 film “ End of the Line” .
  • In November 2015, a car accident took place on the section of Wendelsweg in Frankfurt's city forest, in which three girls aged 14 and 15 were involved. First of all, the two surviving girls told the police that an unknown man, around 30 years old, had driven the car and had fled after the accident. But it quickly became apparent that the teenagers had driven the stolen car themselves.
