Wenceslaus Mattes
Wenzeslaus Mattes (born September 24, 1815 in Renquishausen , † November 20, 1886 in Weingarten (Württemberg) ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman , university professor and politician .
Life
After private lessons with a pastor Schreiber in Todtnauberg , Mattes attended high school in Rottweil and the Konviktsgymnasium in Ehingen . He studied theology and philosophy in Tübingen and was awarded a Dr. theol. as well as Dr. phil. PhD. He was ordained a priest on September 16, 1840 . After a year-long scientific journey, he became a repetitee at the Wilhelmsstift on October 22, 1844appointed in Tübingen, he was also given permission to give lectures on philosophy. Because of a primary sermon held on September 8, 1845 in his home parish Renquishausen , Mattes was removed from his position by the royal Catholic church council on February 3, 1846 and was then parish administrator in Mögglingen .
He moved to Prussia and on December 15, 1846 was appointed professor of theology at the philosophical-theological school of the Hildesheim seminary . In 1854 he was the same rain .
In 1860 Mattes returned to the Diocese of Rottenburg and became pastor in Böttingen on December 18, 1860 , and then city and garrison pastor in Weingarten on June 27, 1866. From 1868 to 1871 he was also a school inspector for Ravensburg . Mattes represented Waldsee as a member of the state parliament in the second chamber of the Württemberg state estates . He was also a member of the board of the philosophical section of the Görres Society .
He died of a heart attack .
Publications (selection)
Mattes was co-editor and, alongside Pius Gams, the most ardent author of the Hildesheim Theological Monthly . He also published regularly in the Tübingen Theological Quarterly . He was one of the main contributors to the twelve-volume church lexicon by Benedikt Welte and Heinrich Joseph Wetzer , which was published in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1847 to 1860 . He also wrote articles for the General Kirchenlexikon of Joseph Aschbach that from 1846 to 1850 in Frankfurt appeared.
