action

Paul Lohmann, a formerly successful sales representative for Spiegel, lives a selfish, but also a mendacious life. He drinks, cheats on his wife, is despised by his daughter, and now he is losing his professional connection under the new boss. He suppressed the accidental death of his second daughter, he has never visited her grave. His wife's letter of divorce lies unopened on his table. Even in front of himself, Lohmann can hardly maintain the facade of the successful employee and family man. He takes the hitchhiker Angie with him on a customer trip. Drunk and rushed, he had an accident in a tunnel. Lohmann is later declared brain dead in the hospital , but can continue to observe what is happening as a spirit of himself, invisible to everyone - except for Angie, who turns out to be an angel who is supposed to guide him through the "world between life and death". Angie allows Lohmann to repeat the last hours before the accident, even several times, but in the end only after he has played against her with a manipulated coin. After his attempts to prevent the accident fail again and again, Lohmann finally uses the time he gave to face his mistakes. His family "should keep him in good memory". When he succeeds, the exit of the tunnel of misfortune shines in a bright light , into which Lohmann enters. His deceased daughter runs towards him. - Lohmann had left instructions that his body should serve as an organ donor . While the doctors are preparing, you can see his grieving family. The film ends with a cliffhanger : immediately before the credits roll, a doctor finds “still life” in Lohmann's eye when his pupil reacts to light.

Reviews

“While the slapstick quickly fades into the background, the film stirs where it is not so thick. I guess you can't try enough to tell a story about the famous second chance. Before it is too late. Because often it is as the angel says: 'A big mouth in life, but when it comes to dying, a cowardly philosopher.' "

- Axel Weidemann : Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"In places, and that is no damage, 'He who gives up is dead' looks like the deluxe long version of a ' Tatortreiniger ' episode."

“Its [Lohmann's] gradual change is charmingly staged, but the film too often drifts into slapstick , for example when Angie, played by Friederike Kempter, comments on the hospital with biting ironic comments. And so the viewer also ends up in a kind of in-between world: Undecided whether to laugh or cry in view of the deliberately sarcastic scenes. "

- Eva Fritsch : Süddeutsche Zeitung
