geography

Geographical location

Werlau is located in the outflowing northeastern Hunsrück above the Middle Rhine Valley in close proximity to the Loreley . The center of the village lies in a slight hollow, while the district lies in a partly flat, unwooded area that extends to the edge of the Rheinengtal, partly a hilly landscape that climbs towards the wooded Hunsrück. The core city of St. Goar is 3 km away.

Werlau also includes the Boxberger Hof, Forsthaus Brandswald, Hof auf der Schanz, Prinzenstein and Marienhof residential areas .

history

The first traces of settlement can be found from the Franconian times. The often quoted first documentary mention in the year 992 is based on a document handed down by Georg Friedrich Schott , one of the archivists who was found to have falsified many documents. There is therefore a justified suspicion of forgery in this document as well.

Around 1200 the St. Kastor monastery in Koblenz was the main landlord . In the following period Werlau belonged to the County of Katzenelnbogen , which came into the possession of the Landgraves of Hesse in 1479 after the death of the last Count of Katzenelnbogen, Philip the Elder . When Hesse was divided up in 1567, Philip II of Hesse-Rheinfels a . a. the left bank of the former Lower County of Katzenelnbogen . After the Hessen-Rheinfels line died out , Werlau belonged alternately to Hessen-Kassel or Hessen-Darmstadt until 1795 .

On October 27, 1794, French troops also entered Werlau. Werlau came to France through the separate peace treaty of August 28, 1795 between France and Hesse-Kassel. From 1798 to 1814 Werlau belonged administratively to the canton Sankt Goar , the arrondissement Simmern and the Rhine-Mosel department . Due to the 1815 at the Congress of Vienna agreements reached Werlau came as a separate municipality for the Kingdom of Prussia in 1816 part of the newly formed circle St. Goar in Koblenz .

As part of the Rhineland-Palatinate municipal reform , the previously independent community was dissolved on June 7, 1969 and incorporated into the city of St. Goar as a district.

Mining

Mining was of great importance well into the 20th century. Lead and zinc ores have been mined in the pits of the Gute Hope mine since the 18th century. A steel winding tower was the landmark of the Werlauer Schacht, which was inaugurated on May 1, 1936 under the name Adolf-Hitler-Schacht.

Religious communities

Various religious communities have gained a foothold in Werlau, which is reflected, among other things, in the various church buildings in the town. The majority of the residents belong to the Evangelical Church .

The Reformation was introduced in 1527, but until the Union of 1817 the Werlau Protestants were divided into Lutherans and Reformed . Due to the feudal dependence on the St. Kastor monastery in Koblenz, however, 15 residents remained Catholic when the Reformation was introduced .

Jews also lived in Werlau from the Middle Ages to 1942 .
