Ranz attended the Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin and studied law and political science at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . He was active in the Corps Normannia Berlin from the summer semester of 1911 and also joined the Corps Saxonia Kiel in 1914 . In August 1914 he started his legal clerkship. As a war volunteer, Ranz took part in various foot artillery formations from August 1914 to November 1918 in the First World War. He was used on the Eastern Front until mid-1915 and then on the Western Front. Ranz became an assessor in 1922, settled as a lawyer in Berlin in May 1922 and was also a notary from May 1928 .

Nazi functionary

After the National Socialist seizure of power , he rose to become one of the leading lawyer officials in Berlin. He joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1933 (membership number 2,593,495). Reinhard Neubert had appointed him acting secretary of the Berlin Chamber Board in April 1933 . Ranz also moved up to the board of the Berlin Lawyers 'Association and the Berlin Notaries' Association, after which he became secretary and treasurer of the Reich Bar Association and chairman of the third honorary senate of the Reich Bar Association. From April 1, 1938, Ranz served as President of the Potsdam Bar Association. In January 1939 he received the honorary title of judicial councilor . After the end of the war he succeeded in reestablishing it in the British zone of occupation . Until his death he was a member of the board of the Aid Fund for over 40 years.

Corps functionary

In 1950, Ranz reestablished the Association of Old Corps Students under conservative auspices. He rejected the merger with the Weinheim Senior Citizens 'Convention , which was especially desired by the Munich Senior Citizens' Convention and Herbert Scherer . Elected chairman of the VAC board in 1952, he initiated the establishment of the expert commission in 1952. He made sure that the Deutsche Corpszeitung appeared again from 1953 and that the 4th edition of the Kösener Handbuch was printed. He also initiated the new edition of the Kösener Corpslist , which was only published in 1960 .

From 1954 the Kösener conferences took place in Würzburg . To this end, Ranz organized ceremonies in the Würzburg residence . A new VAC statute and a cartel agreement with the Weinheim Seniors' Convent (1955) were also based on his initiative. Ranz also promoted the cooperation with the other striking corporation associations in the Andernach working group . At the establishment of the Association for Student Dormitories e. V. in Bonn he was significantly involved. He couldn't get his way with his strict ideas about satisfaction . In April 1953 he presented Federal President Theodor Heuss with the declaration of honor of the Andernach Working Group of Weapons Student Associations to give up unconditional satisfaction with the weapon. The duel is basically since then for weapons student academics no longer an issue.

Werner Ranz Foundation

In 1968 Ranz founded the Werner Ranz Foundation named after him . The main purpose of the foundation was to support orphaned lawyers in need in their training. Today, the foundation also generally awards scholarships to needy students in their final year.

He died at the age of 77 and was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery . The burial place no longer exists.
