The Weser bridge is located about 400 m northwest of the in the core city of Hann. Münden lying Tanzwerders , where the Fulda and Werra flow together to form the Weser. It connects the districts of Altmünden on the Reinhardswald on the left of the Weser and Gimte on the Bramwald on the right of the river .

history

Old bridges

The first massive bridge in the former Münden was the old Werra bridge from the 14th century. The next fixed Weser crossings existed in Höxter and Hameln during the Middle Ages as well as in the early modern period . Another bridge in Münden, then known as Hannoversch Münden, was the stone railway bridge over the Werra for the Dransfeld ramp in 1852 after a four-year construction period . The pioneer bridge over the Fulda was completed in 1882 and connected the old town with Altmünden and Neumünden .

prehistory

As early as 1933 there were considerations to build a new bridge because the old Werra bridge was no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic. The planning was not carried out because of the Second World War . After the war, the construction of a new bridge became acute, as the Allies' military traffic had caused considerable damage to the Alte Werra Bridge, which had already been classified as a monument. In the 1950s, the surge in motor vehicle traffic burdened the bridge with around 10,000 vehicles and around 1,000 trucks a day. These conditions led to the construction of the Weser Bridge from 1958 to 1960. It is a haunched girder bridge .

The current bridge also serves to relieve traffic in the old town. While supraregional through traffic initially accepted the new bridge, local traffic preferred the Alte Werra Bridge for a long time, as the route through the old town seemed shorter.

Planned new building

In 2015 it became known that the bridge was dilapidated and had to be renewed. The reason is the use of steel that has been corroded by moisture. There is no acute danger to flowing traffic, but preliminary work (tree felling) for the new bridge was carried out in 2016. The bridge should be completed in 2018. The Lower Saxony state authority for road construction and traffic estimates the costs for demolition, new construction and redesign of the intersection areas at around 10 million euros. The federal government bears the costs because the bridge is part of federal highway 3.

According to more recent plans, the new construction should start in early 2019 and the new bridge should be ready in mid-2020.
