Westernach is a district of the Swabian district town of Mindelheim .

geography

Westernach is about four kilometers northwest of the city center of Mindelheim. The Westernach flows through the Westernach district . The town is connected to the main town by the MN 25 district road.

history

The place was first mentioned in connection with Heinrich von Westernach , a ministerial who was in the service of the Augsburg bishop in 1258. Pope Nicholas IV transferred the upper tithe to the Mindelheim Augustinian hermits . Lutz von Westernach, an insurgent, had to vow to Emperor Ludwig IV in 1331 that he would never again fight against the Emperor and the Empire and was thus released from captivity. In 1363 the owner of the place changed. Schwiggers VI's widow, who had held the property until then, sold the place to the Lords of Hochschlitz. From these the place came to Duke Friedrich von Teck. This transferred the patronage rights and the bailiwick of the parish to the Mindelheimer Augustinians . After the Augustinians gave up the monastery and took it over by the Jesuits, the rights passed to them and later to the Maltese. With the Junker Jos von Urbach, a new noble family came to the village in the middle of the 15th century. At the site of today's gravel pit in the north of the village was their castle. The Church of St. Andrew was built around 1500 and was later renovated and rebuilt several times. The place received the first school building in 1817. During the Thirty Years War, troops passing through damaged the place. A small chapel was built to the south-east of the village in 1753 and was consecrated to St. John the Baptist . In the Napoleonic Wars , the place had to mourn six deaths in 1812. In World War I, eleven, in came the Second 28 citizens lost their lives. On January 1, 1976, the place was incorporated into the district town of Mindelheim together with the districts of Bergerhausen and Doldenhausen .
