The Westkampfbahn is a football stadium in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Düren .

Location and facilities

The stadium is located in the southwest of the city of Düren on Mariaweilerstraße west of the Rur . The Westkampfbahn has a capacity of up to 15,000 spectators today. The main grandstand, which has a gable roof, has around 400 covered seats. The playing area made of natural grass was surrounded by a running track with an ash surface, which is no longer available after the renovation and redesign of the square.

history

The Westkampfbahn was opened on August 9, 1914 by the Germania Düren association . The Finnish javelin thrower Juho Saaristo , who became Olympic champion in 1912 , was to appear at the opening ceremony . Since the First World War broke out a few days before the event , Saaristo had to cancel his participation. In 1927 Germania acquired 25,000 square meters of land and expanded the stadium further. For the reopening on May 1, 1927, Germania Düren played a friendly match against Schwarz-Weiß Essen in front of 2,500 spectators and lost 4-7.

For the expansion, Germania teamed up with their local rival Dürener FC 03 . Both clubs had taken over financially. In order to avoid bankruptcy , they therefore merged on August 8, 1935 to form SG Düren 99 . This played at the stadium at Obertor before it was destroyed in the air raid on Düren on November 16, 1944 and occupied by the US Army . SG Düren 99 therefore moved to the Westkampfbahn in 1946, which was less severely damaged. She played from 1950 to 1959 in the then second class II Division West .

The attendance record was set on August 2, 1954, when SG Düren 99 in the first round of the DFB Cup in front of 15,000 spectators, according to other sources even 17,000 spectators, against 1. FC Kaiserslautern around the newly crowned world champion Fritz Walter , Ottmar Walter , Werner Kohlmeyer , Werner Liebrich and Horst Eckel lost 2: 5. The stadium was renovated in 2000 and 2001, before SG Düren 99 merged with GFC Düren 09 on April 1, 2011 to form SG GFC Düren 99 . With effect from June 15, 2018, the soccer department of SG GFC joined 1. FC Düren .

In 2014, the main grandstand, which was in danger of collapsing, was renovated and the stadium was named the performance base of the German Football Association . The Sparkasse Düren youth and sports foundation bought the 50,000 square meter site on September 2, 2019. In July 2020, 1. FC Düren presented plans to expand the Westkampfbahn. The stadium is to be gradually expanded to 12,000 seats and made suitable for the Regionalliga West.
