Wies (also: "in der Wies") was a permanently populated district of Laterns in Vorarlberg , Austria until 1926 and has been a low-lying alp (Voralpe / Maiensäß ) ever since . The first upwelling was on May 27, 1926.

Origin of name

The name "Wies" for meadow is very common in Vorarlberg .

history

The Wies district was founded by Walsers in the 14th century and has always belonged to the Laterns community ever since. There were up to 12 inhabited houses. In a certificate of division from 1409 a woman appears "Agta Heintzen ab der Wies", from which it can be concluded that there was a permanent settlement from around the beginning of the 15th century.

In 1664 a chapel was built, which was dedicated to St. Martin and which was destroyed by an avalanche in 1689 (the altar and pictures were preserved). In 1875 the chapel was rebuilt about 15 m from the old location because the previous location was too damp and the chapel too small. On March 4, 1926, the last regular mass in Wies was read in the chapel.

A school was set up around 1757 (presumably alternating in different houses), in 1860 in a permanent private house and some time later a school building of its own. The children had to march to the other side of the valley for religious instruction, as religious instruction was only held in the Thal district until 1867. The school was closed in December 1925 after the evacuation was almost complete.

In 1850 the previously existing poor house was demolished.

In 1889 the first resettlement began in the Wies district, in 1897 three farms were bought by the community, in 1898 another property and in 1907 two more. These are sold again by the municipality in 1910 and bought again in 1925.

In 1940 a material ropeway was built to Wies, which was badly damaged by a lightning strike in 1985.

In the “General National Calendar for Tyrol and Vorarlberg”, 7 houses and 8 families with a total of 24 people are listed in Wies in 1825. Around 1865 the teacher Johann Josef Hartmann mentions “59 souls” who live in the Wies and are spread over 12 farms.

Due to a strong wind throw with around 15,000 cubic meters of damaged wood in mid-February 1925 ( foehn storm ), the municipality of Laterns received the necessary funds from the wood sales to replace the previous owners of the district of Wies and the settlement was converted into an alp in municipal property.

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The former district of Wies is about 960  m above sea level. A. and 1090  m above sea level. A. The Alpe Wies at about 1020  m above sea level. A. Wies borders the municipality of Übersaxen to the south-west and lies the Schwemmealpe (Übersaxen). To the west and north, Wies is surrounded by forest and to the east, Wies borders the Christwaldalpe (separated by the Kristawaldtobel).

While the other places in Laternsertal are on the sunny side of the valley, Wies was founded on the shady side. Due to the seclusion, the residents needed around an hour of arduous walking to get to the other side of the valley. This also meant that the owners of the houses often changed.

In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” (1839) Wies is still listed as an independent hamlet and part of Laterns. Likewise in the “ Provincial Handbook of Tyrol and Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ”.

Today there is only a non-public access road to Wies, which was built in 1986 and various hiking trails.

Waters

There is no significant body of water in Wies itself. The Kleinrüftobelbach flows to the west and the Kristwaldtobel with the stream of the same name to the east.

Craft, trade

The residents of Wies (Wiesler) lived mainly from the cattle trade , Küblerei , contract woodwork , embroidery in contract work and from growing their own crops .
