White Water Racing World Championships 1961
The 1961 Whitewater Racing World Championships took place from July 22nd to 26th, 1961. The venue was the Rote Weißeritz in Rabenauer Grund near Hainsberg , a community near Dresden in the GDR . It was the second world championship in this sport, the first in 1959 in Treignac (France). The whitewater racing world championships were held together with the canoe slalom world championships in 1961 . 13 nations took part in both competitions.
In order to ensure that there was enough water in the Rote Weißeritz, around 18 m³ of water per second was drained from the Malter dam and channeled into the river. During the two world championships, 30,000 to 40,000 visitors came to the Rote Weißeritz.
