Wilfried is an old German male given name , also used in Belgium and the Netherlands .

Origin and meaning of the name

Old Low German and Old High German : willio "Wille", fridu "Friede, Schutz". This allows for the interpretation “who longs for peace” or “the one with the will to peace”. This name is also available as "Wilfriede" as a female first name.

The name is particularly widespread in northern Germany and owes its spread and use to Anglo-Saxon missionaries of the early Middle Ages.

April 24th (Catholic) or October 12th (Anglican), in memory of Saint Wilfrid . He was Bishop of York and died in 709 or 710.
