Wilhelm Ernst Möller , often just Wilhelm Möller , (also Ernst Wilhelm Möller ; born October 1, 1827 in Erfurt , † January 8, 1892 in Kiel ) was a German Lutheran theologian , church historian and university professor .

Life

Möller was the son of the clergyman Johann Friedrich Möller . After his father became general superintendent in Magdeburg , Möller attended high school there , which he graduated in 1847. In the same year he went to study theology at the University of Berlin , moved to the University of Halle in 1849 and then to the University of Bonn for three semesters . In Koblenz he passed the theological exam on October 20, 1851 with "very good". In 1852 he resumed his studies in Halle and on January 18, 1854, Gregorii Nysseni de natura hominis doctrina: ill. et cum Origeniana comparata his doctorate to Lic. theol. and shortly afterwards, on March 6, 1854, his habilitation in the subjects of the New Testament and Church history. During this time he began working on the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church (RE), to which he contributed a large number of articles. After he had already taught for four years as a private lecturer at the University of Halle and at the same time there was no prospect of promotion to a professorship during this time, he underwent the second theological examination in Magdeburg, which he passed with "excellent". In spite of this, no parish could be assigned to him at first and he taught as a private lecturer at the university in Halle until 1862.

Möller became pastor of the parish in Grumbach near Langensalza in 1863 and received an honorary theological doctorate ( D. theol. ) From the University of Greifswald in the same year . During his time as a pastor he was also active as a writer. In addition to monographs and lexicon articles, a number of articles were written. He was also an employee of the General German Biography (ADB). In 1869 he moved to Oppin as a pastor . His work on Osiander , for which he had also done archival studies in Königsberg in Prussia , drew attention to him again and in 1873 he was appointed to succeed Nikolaus Thomsen as a full professor of church history at the University of Kiel . He accepted the offer and in 1881 he held the post of rector of the university. After his predecessors prevented the establishment, in 1881 he allowed the establishment of the Association of German Students in Kiel . He was also a regular preacher in Kiel.

Möller was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Halle ( Dr. phil. Hc ) on November 10, 1883 . Because of a kidney disease, he was in the summer of 1891 emeritus and finally in November 1891 secret consistory appointed.

The writer Lina Walther was his sister.
