Wilhelm Friedmann (engineer)

Wilhelm Friedmann (born September 25, 1887 in Vienna , † November 29, 1936 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German-Austrian engineer who fell victim to the National Socialist racial ideology .

Career

Wilhelm Friedmann lost his Jewish parents at an early age. His mother L. Friedmann, nee Braun, died in Vienna in 1897, his father Adolf Friedmann, a businessman by profession, in 1902. Wilhelm Friedmann successfully completed his mechanical engineering studies at the Vienna University of Technology in 1911 with the second state examination. In 1915 he submitted his dissertation to the Technical University of Vienna. Their title was: "Investigations into the Holzwarth gas turbine for coke oven gas ".

Wilhelm Friedmann was called up for military service, but had to be released as a result of an inflammation of the joint. At the instigation of the Austrian government, he was delegated to Berlin to construct submarine engines there. Following this activity, Wilhelm Friedmann worked at ironworks in Hanover and Mülheim an der Ruhr , at Daimler in Berlin-Marienfelde and as a department head in an automobile plant in Stettin . He also worked for four years as a teacher at the Hainichen Technical Center .

In mid-July 1920 Wilhelm Friedmann found out that the municipal polytechnic college in Friedberg was looking for a lecturer in mathematics. The application submitted by Wilhelm Friedmann was successful and he was able to take on the position of engineering-mathematician on October 1, 1920. He had previously converted to the Protestant faith through baptism in Stettin in August 1920 . After a one-year probationary period, he concluded a service contract with the city of Friedberg (Hesse) on November 15, 1921 and was permanently hired. In August 1926 he married in Frankfurt am Main and then moved to Friedberg. On January 1, 1927, he was planned to become a civil servant ; in fact, this took place on April 1, 1927. At the same time, he was awarded the title of municipal building officer . Wilhelm Friedmann's teaching activities expanded in the following years. In addition to teaching mathematics, he also taught his specialty in mechanical engineering, as well as teaching the students in mechanics and internal combustion engines . Wilhelm Friedmann was very respected among the students, especially because of his professional competence.

The Hessian Reich Governor Jakob Sprenger put Wilhelm Friedmann into early and compulsory retirement on September 18, 1933 on the basis of Section 3 of the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service with effect from January 1, 1934 due to non-Aryan descent. The Friedmann couple moved to Frankfurt am Main at Finkenhofstrasse 26 I at the end of September 1933. The pension paid to Wilhelm Friedmann was only granted until April 1, 1935. As he was exposed to further persecution, Wilhelm Friedmann put an end to his life on November 29, 1936 in Frankfurt am Main.
