Wilhelm I (Hessen-Rotenburg)

Wilhelm I "the elder" of Hessen-Rotenburg (born May 15, 1648 in Kassel , † November 20, 1725 in Langenschwalbach ) was Landgrave of Hessen-Rotenburg from 1683 . He was a son of Ernst I of Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg . Wilhelm was given the nickname "the Elder" to distinguish it from his nephew Wilhelm von Hessen-Wanfried .

Life

After the death of his father, Wilhelm became sovereign in one half of the Rotenburger Quart , the quarter of the Landgraviate Hessen-Kassel given by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel to the sons of his second wife, Juliane , as media rule . He resided in Rotenburg an der Fulda , but often stayed in Langenschwalbach in the Taunus . His descendants were in direct line with the following regents in Rotenburg; his grandson Ernst Konstantin reunited the quarters in one hand.

Wilhelm's domain comprised the domains of the Niedergrafschaft Katzenelnbogen , the offices and castles Rheinfels , Reichenberg and Hohenstein , as well as a share of Umstadt and the quadrilateral on the Lahn. He exchanged town and office of Eschwege with his brother Karl for town and office of Rotenburg. He also owned the Falkenberg , Cornberg and Langenschwalbach estates as a precipitate . In addition, he received income from the Hessian quarter in the form of Rhine, wine, land and wool customs and the Bopparder Wartpfennig .

Wilhelm died in 1725 and was buried in Langenschwalbach in the Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth.

Wilhelm married Countess Maria Anna von Löwenstein-Wertheim (* 1652) on March 3, 1669 in Rochefort . Anna died in 1688 and was buried in the Franciscan monastery in Boppard. He had eight children with her, including his successor Ernst II. Leopold :
