Wilhelm Langewiesche

Wilhelm Langewiesche (also: Wilhelm Langewiesche-Brandt , pseudonyms : Hans Amelungk , Johannes Armbruster , Ernst Hartung , Ulrich Korff-Rheda , Peter Kurz , Enno Nielsen ; * March 18, 1866 in Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ); † January 9 1934 in Ebenhausen near Munich ) was a German publisher and writer .

Life

Wilhelm Langewiesche was the son of the bookseller Wilhelm Robert Langewiesche; one of his brothers was the publisher Karl Robert Langewiesche . After attending grammar school, Wilhelm Langewiesche completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller and worked as a bookshop assistant in Wiesbaden , Halle (Saale) , Leipzig and Breslau . From 1893 he was a partner in his father's bookstore in Rheydt , and from 1896 to 1903 sole owner of this company. In 1906 he founded the Langewiesche-Brandt publishing house, based in Düsseldorf and Leipzig; in the same year the company moved to Ebenhausen near Munich . The publishing house was particularly successful in the following years with its series "The Books of the Rose". Wilhelm Langewiesche was married twice and had five children, including the writer Marianne Langewiesche .

In addition to his publishing activities, Wilhelm Langewiesche also published his own novels , short stories and poems and was the editor of classic editions. 1923, he was from the University of Bonn the honorary doctorate awarded.
