One of his ancestors, a scholar, worked on the Reformation business and, as was customary at the time, changed his name to Latin, Musculus, which has since remained in use by the family. His father was the Landgrave Hessian Chamber Councilor Georg Heinrich Wendel Musculus (born March 11, 1695; † 1766), married to Maria Margarethe Elisabeth von Gelius (born April 13, 1701; † April 27, 1749).

Military career

Meusel was with the Hessen-Darmstadt cadets when Count von Hak, who was a good friend of his father's, got him into Prussian service. From 1742 Meusel was second lieutenant in the Eckartsberg regiment. In 1751 he was promoted to prime lieutenant , in 1757 a staff member and in 1759 a captain , in 1771 a major and commander of a grenadier battalion. This consisted of the grenadier companies of the regiments "von Eichmann" and "von Eckartsberg". On May 28, 1774 he was awarded the Order Pour le Mérite for his services during the Seven Years' War . In 1781 Meusel became a lieutenant colonel and on May 25, 1783 a colonel.

Meusel was a member of the Magdeburg Freemason Lodge Ferdinand for happiness

Since 1744 he has attended all campaigns with the battalion and has particularly distinguished himself on various occasions. On February 5, 1770, the Prussian King Frederick II granted him the hereditary nobility because of his services and changed his name back to Meusel .
