Billy Childs ( William Edward Childs , born March 8, 1957 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz pianist and composer.

Live and act

Childs had first piano lessons at the age of six and attended the Community School of the Performing Arts at the age of sixteen , where he studied music theory with Marienne Uszler and piano with John Weisenfluh . From 1975 to 1979 he studied composition under Robert Linn at the University of Southern California .

Childs worked early with JJ Johnson , with whom he made his first recordings. From 1978 to 1984 he was a partner of Freddie Hubbard , to be heard on Pinnacle: Live & Unreleased from Keystone Korner ; after that he led Night Flight , a group that Dianne Reeves belonged to. Since 1988 he has been recording albums as a band leader. Besides his own quartet, he also worked with Allan Holdsworth , Eddie Daniels , Bobby Hutcherson , Branford Marsalis and others.

Childs has composed a number of classical works since the early 1990s. As a composer and jazz musician, he received ten Grammy nominations and was awarded three Grammy awards.

In 2014 he recorded an album in memory of the singer and songwriter Laura Nyro . It reached number 1 on the US jazz album charts.
