Willmersdorf is a district of the rural community of Großbreitenbach in the Ilm district in Thuringia with around 300 inhabitants.
geography
Willmersdorf is located on a plateau in the northwestern Thuringian Slate Mountains . To the west of the village is the 808 meter high Lange Berg . The Fürst-Günther monument and the highest point of the Long Mountain are in the Willmersdorfer town hall. The place itself is about 650 meters above sea level. To the east of the village, the Junkerbach and Natterbach, both tributaries of the Schwarza, flow in deeply cut valleys. One kilometer west of the village, “on the road”, there are also some residential buildings belonging to Willmersdorf, which are called Neu-Willmersdorf . The place is a typical street village , with the peculiarity that both ends of the street are dead ends.
history
Willmersdorf was first mentioned in documents in 1381. In past centuries, mining played an important role for the town's residents. In 1625 this came to a standstill. Until 1920 Willmersdorf belonged to the Gehren office in the Principality or Free State of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen ( Oberherrschaft ), while Herschdorf , to which the place belonged from May 1, 1974 to January 1, 2019, to the Königsee office in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ( Oberherrschaft ) counted.
politics
Maik Lippold (FWG Willmersdorf) has been the local mayor since the local elections in Thuringia on May 26, 2019. Together with four other members, it forms the local council.
Economy and Transport
Despite the altitude of 600 to 700 meters, the Willmersdorf area is used for agriculture. There used to be a few glass processing companies in the town. The weaving mill , which operated in the village until 1927, was also important.
Willmersdorf is isolated in terms of traffic. Only one road leads out of the village, which leads to the Herschdorf - Gillersdorf road. In the record winter 2001/2002 the place was "snowed in" for about a week after Christmas and thus cut off from the outside world.
Personalities
- The parents of Heinrich Barth , a German African explorer, came from Willmersdorf, but moved to Hamburg before he was born .
