Willy Prölß (born September 9, 1930 in Nuremberg ; † March 17, 2014 ) was a German trade unionist , local politician ( SPD ), former mayor and honorary citizen of the city of Nuremberg.

Life

Willy Prölß came from a deeply social democratic family that was politically persecuted several times during the Nazi era . His grandfather Johann Prölß , who had been a party member and Reichsbannermann since 1907, and his comrade Heiner Stöhr had the main responsibility since 1933 for the distribution of social democratic documents in Nuremberg, which the exiled SPD party executive in Prague wrote. As part of an illegal distribution network, an intensive courier activity on foot or by bicycle up to the border with Czechoslovakia was developed in 1933, which ended on April 4, 1934 with the arrest of Johann Prölß and numerous colleagues. A second wave of arrests followed on April 4, 1934, which also included Willy Prölß's uncle, Karl Prölß. In a total of seven "high treason trials" from January 1935 onwards, a total of 68 Social Democrats were sentenced to long prison terms by the Munich Higher Regional Court, which they served in various concentration camps. After their release, they were again taken into " protective custody " and sent to concentration camps. For example, Johann Prölß, Willy Prölß's grandfather, was sent to the Dachau and Flossenbürg concentration camps after a prison sentence . He was released at the end of 1944 after ten and a half years of imprisonment and internment in a concentration camp. Karl Prölß was also tried and imprisoned like his father.

After attending elementary school, Willy Prölß completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Staedtler pencil factory in Nuremberg and joined the SAJ, the Socialist Workers' Youth , in 1945 , which was part of the Association of Socialist Youth in Germany - Die Falken that same year . In 1947 he joined the SPD. From 1948 to 1960 he held several positions in trade union and party work. From 1956 he was a member of the Nuremberg city council and from 1960 to 1972 chairman of the SPD city council group. From 1972 to 1996 he was mayor at the side of the SPD mayors Andreas Urschlechter and Peter Schönlein . 1968 to 1985 he also held the post of sub-district chairman of the Nuremberg SPD.
