The Anabaptists is the 20th episode in the Wilsberg TV series . It was first broadcast on April 7, 2007 on ZDF . Directed by Martin Gies , the screenplay was written by Eckehard Ziedrich based on Jürgen Kehrer 's novel Wilsberg und die Anababäufer .

action

After 473 years, the "Anabaptists" returned to Münster . The grave of Herbert Fredenböck, the former gardener of the Münster diocese , who was killed in a car accident, is opened at night. The next day his bones can be found in the replicas of the historical iron cages in the city museum , in which almost five centuries ago the Münster “Anabaptists” were hung on the steeple of the Lamberti Church . The diocese receives a call threatening the church in a distorted voice.

Wilsberg is then consulted by Father Gabriel, an old friend he knows from political demonstrations in the 1970s, to track down the grave robbers. Ekki meanwhile meets with fund manager Claudia Weinert, who looks after a church fund at CW Investments, for a blind date in a restaurant.

The Anabaptists strike again and kidnap a baby from the nursery of a city hospital. It is found shortly afterwards on the steps of the Lamberti Church. Wilsberg seeks out the widow of the deceased Fredenböck. He learns from her that her husband was a gardener at Gut Moorwessel. Wilsberg's questioning of the wealthy and godly owner of the estate, Walter Moorwessel, is abruptly interrupted by the ringing of bells that echo from the otherwise unused chapel in the forest. When Wilsberg arrives at the chapel with Walter Moorwessel and his daughter Mareike, he meets Father Gabriel there, who claims to have been called here by telephone by the Anabaptists. You must find that Father Gabriel's spiritual brother, Monsignor Katz, has been tied to the beams of the chapel. Nothing suggests suicide, as Katz was apparently stabbed to death before his killer hung him.

On the following day, Walter Moorwessel brings 100,000 euros in cash in a suitcase to the Central Bank. He is attacked by a masked perpetrator who throws the suitcase over a wall while on the run, but cannot climb it as planned. On the other side of the wall, Ekki is waiting for his friend Claudia, whom he has given hope of paying into her fund. When he opens the found suitcase, she looks over his shoulder and assumes that he has brought the cash for her fund. Ultimately, it is even more than the minimum deposit of 50,000 euros, which Ekki did not have either.

Alex Holtkamp has started her position at the public prosecutor's office, where she is investigating a car accident with property damage and hit-and-run. Their investigations lead them to the farm of the farmer Edwin Vosshövel. Mareike Moorwessel tells Wilsberg that she was raped by Herbert Fredenböck, which is why he is the father of her 24-year-old son Tobias. Tobias has often sought refuge on the neighboring farm Vosshövel, which is why Wilsberg makes his way to this farm. There he not only met Alex, but also Tobias, who stated that he had contact with the Anabaptists, who were a group of six under the direction of Father Gabriel. When Walter Moorwessel appears on the farm in search of his grandson, he recognizes Tobias' white face mask from the robbery on his suitcase and confronts Tobias. At the urging of his grandfather, Tobias made a statement to the police about the Anabaptist group the following day, which only turned out to be a false statement a few days later. Then Tobias goes into hiding.

In order to help Ekki to get back the found 100,000 euros from Claudia, Wilsberg pretends to be a donor to the fund manager. In an interview with Claudia, Wilsberg learns in confidence that Walter Moorwessel holds 60% of the fund shares in the CW investment fund. Ekki confirms Wilsberg's assumption that the taxed 250,000 euros that Moorwessel reports annually are not enough to purchase these fund shares. Georg Wilsberg assumes that Moorwessel paid black money into the fund. He asked the gullible Monsignor Katz to broker building projects, whose balance sheets he falsified in order to be able to flow the surpluses into the fund through tax evasion . According to the fund's statutes, the fund must immediately reinvest the money in construction projects, which Moorwessel received again. Ekki has a search carried out at CW Investment and on the Moorwessel estate.

Wilsberg learns from Herbert Fredenböck's widow that her husband was unable to father . Contrary to Mareike Moorwessel's statement, he cannot be Tobia's father. Wilsberg looks for Tobias again at Vosshövel, where he finds the sawed-off barrel of a shotgun in the barn where Tobias often sleeps.

Wilsberg suspects evil and, together with Edwin Vosshövel, follows Walter and Mareike Moorwessel's car to Lamberti Church. At the church tower, Tobias forces his grandfather to admit at gunpoint that he abused his mother and is therefore not only his grandfather but also his father. In addition, Tobias admits that he invented the Anabaptist group, but that he is its only member. He is only ashamed, however, that Walter Moorwessel has taken the name of the "Anabaptists" as an excuse to cover up the murder of Monsignor Katz, who had discovered Moorwessel's machinations and requested an audit at CW Invest.

Inspector Anna Springer and Overbeck arrest Tobias and Walter Moorwessel. Alex Holtkamp, who is now responsible for the Moorwessel case, classifies the missing 100,000 euros as harmless in order to relieve Ekki. Father Gabriel, who due to the incriminating statement by Tobias meanwhile in custody was taken, is released from prison. Mareike Moorwessel moves out of her father's estate.

background

The film was shot in Münster and Cologne . Filming, which took place in parallel with the episode Under Indictment , began on October 5, 2006 and ended on December 7, 2006.

In Münster, the film was shot at the Lambertikirche , on whose tower the iron cages of the Münster Anabaptists , polemically called Anabaptists, hang independently of the film . Among other things, the scene in which the kidnapped baby is placed on the church steps was created here. Recordings were also made at Münster Cathedral and at the Solder antiquarian bookshop in Frauenstrasse, where the Wilsberg antiquarian bookshop can be found in the film. First, Ekki, and later Wilsberg, bought flowers at the Prinzipalmarkt . The fictitious Central Bank was located in the premises of the Erbdrostenhof . At the back of the Erbdrostenhof, the photos were taken at the corner of Maria-Euthymia-Platz and Ringoldsgasse, showing Ekki waiting at the brick wall where he found the suitcase. Alex examines the electrical box damaged in the accident in the old town on the Bült. The scene in which Wilsberg and Alex eat at the snack bar was filmed on Domplatz . The city's historic town hall can be seen in the background .

On June 21, 2007, the episode was released on DVD with FSK-12 approval, along with the 18th episode Miss-Wahl von Polarfilm . In addition to the two main films, the DVD contains a making-of and a portrait of the city of Münster as bonus material.

The Running Gag Bielefeld in this episode refers to the location of the accident, about which Alex is investigating on his own, which occurred on the corner of Bielefelder Straße and Osnabrücker Straße.

reception

Audience ratings

4.8 million viewers saw the episode The Anabaptists when it was first broadcast on ZDF , which made up a market share of 17.4% and meant the day's victory in prime time . A market share of 11.0% was achieved among 14 to 49 year olds. The rerun in July 2010 saw 1.58 million viewers, corresponding to 5.5% market share.

criticism

The lexicon of international films sums up that the episode is a “conventional (television) detective film based on the long-established patterns of the series.” “The moody church thriller is only slowly gaining traction. Until a coherent tone, the necessary tension and entertaining side scenes are found, ”judges TV Spielfilm .

Rainer Tittelbach is of the opinion that the episode set in the “church milieu” is “well cast” with Michael Mendl and André Hennicke, but has “a bit of a plot and, for» Wilsberg «standards, little joke”.

The episode The Anabaptists was "quite far removed from an imaginable reality, nonetheless but entertaining", judges the media service teleschau. “A few gloomy images, a crude aesthetic, many puzzling incidents”, the episode knows all about this.

The editors of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung praise, “This Wilsberg develops more and more tension from a person puzzle in which everyone simply has something to hide”. "This Wilsberg is better as a crime thriller, but worse as a comedy than the last Münster crime scene" rest gently! so their verdict.
