Wiltraud Jasper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wiltraud Jasper (* 1915 in Bochum ; † 1996 ), married name Walter-Jasper , was a German graphic artist and illustrator who was mainly known for her woodcuts and book illustrations. The first name is spelled incorrectly more often than Wiltraut or Wiltrud .

life and work

Wiltraud Jasper was born in Bochum in 1915. She passed her Abitur in Essen and studied from 1937 to 1940 at the Folkwang School in Essen and from 1940 to 1943 with Walter Tiemann and Alfred Finsterer at the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig. Since then she has worked as a freelance graphic artist, since 1946 in Stuttgart and since 1960 in Nuremberg- Altenfurt , and from 1983 back in Stuttgart at the latest.

Works

Jasper is best known for her woodblock prints. Her field of activity includes: book equipment, book illustrations, dust jackets, cover covers, greeting cards, bookplates , magazine covers , calendar pages, fabric prints, designing agricultural educational walking shows and industrial brochures.

At the beginning of her career she was promoted by Eberhard Hölscher (1890–1969). From 1948 to 1965, Hölscher was President of the Federation of German Commercial Graphics (BDG) and until his death publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine Nutzgraphik . He dedicated the "hardly yet fledged" artist (and another graphic artist) still at war in 1942 an article in commercial graphics . Ten years later he paid tribute to her again in an article and wrote: “She continued to work in a quiet, tenacious and incessant manner, without making much of herself, and is now one of those very few German artists who can express something really personal through woodcuts have. “For a young artist at the beginning of her career, the trade journal for commercial graphics was an important advertising medium.
