Wisecräcker (German Scherzkeks ) is a ska-punk band from Hanover . The so-called heavy metal umlaut introduced by bands such as Blue Öyster Cult , Mötley Crüe or Motörhead is probably due to a strong affinity of the individual band members for heavy metal of the 1980s .

history

The beginnings

The band was founded in Hanover in 1997 and initially consisted of Alex “Dr. Klüse "Mende (saxophone, vocals), Eike" Keeex "Tongers (guitar), Robert" Mr. President “Priebe” (guitar), Lars “Vegas” Iwersen (bass) and Jürgen “Jane” Wichert (drums).

In 1998 Andreas "Los Seggos" Segger joined the trombone and Rolf "Samara" Bertermann joined the trumpet. From now on, Wisecracker owned a complete brass section and thus shaped their “board and brass sound”, which is still known today . In the same year her first work, … de puta madre , an EP comprising six songs, was recorded and released in early 1999 on her own initiative.

The recordings enabled Wisecracker to access relevant compilations. Thus, H-Town is calling on SKA-Attack Vol.2 released for distribution and final cunt down on SKA Chart Busters Vol. 3 . With the song Cuba Libre , the band even made a contribution to the international sampler Puro Eskañol Internacional Vol. 3 , through which they first came into contact with the Californian record label Aztlan Records. The result was a California / Mexico tour.

In 2000 the band signed a contract with the booking agency Insight Booking and played concerts all over Germany. Wisecracker established themselves as a constant crowd puller in their favorite local club, playing at the Sound of Frankfurt Festival and the Open Air on the mountain .

At the end of the year, the recordings for the first long player called I'd rather be down with the… WISECRÄCKER began . On the cover you can see a press snapshot of the singer / saxophonist Mendez, how he engaged with law enforcement officers at the Chaostage 1995 in Hanover.

In the first year over 2000 copies were sold without the band already doing business with a record label or a distributor. Further sampler contributions and the second California tour in September 2001 followed.

The Elmo Records years

In 2002 the band transferred all booking matters to Moskito Promotion , and the first CD was re-released on the in-house label Elmo Records. The X-Mas Vibes Tour with Whitmore and 27 Red also took Wisecräcker to Switzerland and Austria. Rolf “Samara” Bertermann also left the band and was replaced by Leif “mein Gott” Thomsen.

At the beginning of 2003, the second album Para mi gente was produced at the Institute for Sound Research, Hanover, under the direction of Willi Dammeier, and a number of line-up changes were made. The guitarist Robert Priebe left the band, Ngobo Ngobo won Kai as second trombonist for some live appearances , and Jürgen “Jane” Wichert had Hannes “he can do it” replaced Hornerber on drums.

Fully couples all from Para mi gente the song appeared Time to show with the famous singer Denise M'Baye on the Grover Sampler Tune in - ska music in pop style . The band played concerts a. a. with Babylon Circus , Skarface and Laurel Aitken , and performed a. a. at the 13th Potsdam Ska Festival, the 10-year Grover Records Festival and for the third time at the Fährmannsfest in Hanover.

Mention should also be made of the establishment of the independent record label Übersee Records , which is largely due to the initiative of Alex Mendez and the experiences overseas.

The Übersee Records years

In 2004 we finally managed to open up Europe across the board. Concerts and festivals in Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Italy and France allowed Wisecräcker to further expand their fan base on the home continent.

In 2005 it became a little quieter around Wisecräcker regarding the live presence. In the summer, El Presidente , Wisecräcker's third full-length album, was recorded and produced again at the Institut für Wohlklangforschung, Hanover, under the direction of Willi Dammeier, and released in November via Übersee Records.

The year 2006 was marked by live concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Sweden. With the entry of Gerrit "Lee" Laschtowitz, the wind ensemble was permanently expanded to a total of two trombones.

In 2007 Wisecracker continued to tour u. a. through Mexico. In the summer, Sebastian "Sese" Seth, who is now the third trumpeter, was hired.

In January 2008 Wisecracker recorded a new song for the sampler Echte Übersee Records Vol. III , which was released in May . Shortly thereafter, long-time bassist Lars “Vegas” Iwersen left the band and was replaced by Hannes Horneber's twin brother, Henrik “Henker” Horneber.

In July the band went on tour again in California. Wisecracker have been under contract with tapete Booking since November 2008 . In October, Wisecräcker played all over Germany as part of their Monsters of Ska Punk Festival Tour .

2009 began for Wisecräcker with a mini-tour through Spain, which was continued in May in Germany. The band played twice in the opening act for Ska-P : once with the Sondaschule , Rantanplan and others. a. in the turbine hall in Oberhausen in February and at the SKAexPlosion in Northeim in August. From October on, Wisecracker holed up again at the Institute for Sound Research to produce their fourth album The Pact . This time the band got additional help from outside. Jeff Collier, who had worked with the H-Blockx or the Donots , produced the vocals.
