The Bonn Science Shop has approximately 35 employees, the largest of more than 75 science shops worldwide. Under the motto "form - know - act", he is committed to cooperation between science and civil society on key social challenges, for example in the areas of energy transition , climate change , globalization , land consumption , urban development , the labor market and environmental education .

The aim of science shops is to bring inquiries from citizens into science and research and to make the results of science understandable for citizens so that they can get involved competently. Science shops see themselves in a mediating role and act as bridge builders. This sets them apart from the eco-institutes that were created at the same time , which primarily see themselves as - alternative and critical working - scientists. As a non-profit association , WILA Bonn works without a profit claim.

history

WILA Bonn was founded as a non-profit association in 1984 by initially volunteer students who were bothered by the science in the ivory tower. The name goes back to the emancipation movements of the 1960s and 1970s, when empty former shops in major European cities were rededicated and used as ' children 's shops ', 'school shops ', ' science shops ' etc. Science shops based on the Dutch model have also sprung up in seven other German cities. In the following years the number of employees increased steadily. In 2012, WILA moved to its own building on Reuterstraße in Bonn .

Topics and methods

In its work, WILA deals with central social challenges such as the energy transition, globalization or sustainable urban development . In his projects he develops innovative ideas and concepts, establishes networks, creates educational materials and organizes events where citizens and scientists can exchange ideas on an equal footing. WILA is active throughout Germany, but also abroad, in European Union projects . Many of his projects are transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary .

The science shop uses a wide range of methods in its day-to-day work, for example exhibitions , campaigns , multipliers training, simulation games , scenario workshops and science cafés . In doing so, it is based on certain values ​​and guiding principles, including Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Global Learning , Sustainability, Participation , Public Engagement / Citizen Science and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). In addition, WILA Bonn offers citizen advice v. a. on the topics of electrosmog, nutrition, building biology and professional orientation .

Structure and financing

The Bonn Science Shop is a self-managed company . As a non-profit association, it covers costs , but is not profit-oriented. The facility as a whole does not receive any institutional funding. WILA Bonn only receives regular partial funding for its training center, as it is a recognized provider of further training under the North Rhine-Westphalia Continuing Education Act.

The association finances its work through information, measurement and consulting services, through courses, seminars and lectures by the education center, as well as through third-party funded projects. The projects of the WILA Bonn u. a. by the EU Commission , federal and state ministries , federal offices , funding networks, foundations and individual municipalities .

The work is divided into the areas of projects, education center and the weekly information services on the job market for academics. WILA Bonn is also the sponsor of the “Green Play City” nature experience area in Bonn-Dransdorf, the neighboring “International Garden” and the UNWRAPPED environmental theater.

WILA job market

The science shop has been the publisher of two weekly publications with the title “WILA Labor Market” for over 20 years : the “Information service for professions in education, culture and social affairs” and the “Information service for professions in the environment and nature”. The aim of the booklet is to analyze occupational fields and present their development using current job advertisements . Every week, the booklets contain an overview of several hundred current vacancies for academics. To do this, WILA employees evaluate newspapers , specialist magazines and selected online portals . In addition, the information services contain background reports on professional fields, career topics and labor law .

WILA education center

The Education Center of the Bonn Science Shop is a recognized provider of continuing education. It offers seminars, training courses and workshops in Bonn and partly also in Berlin . In addition to professional training lasting several days (e.g. educational leave ), the offer also includes evening events and regular courses (e.g. yoga ). The focus is on the subjects of work and success, personality and society, as well as health and stress management.

Awards

In 2016, WILA Bonn received the “Place of Progress” award from the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. The institution was recognized for dealing with important social challenges such as the energy transition and biological diversity, as well as for its commitment to citizen science and responsible research and innovation . In addition, the approach of WILA Bonn, science and research on the one hand, and civil society on the other hand to bring together different methods, was highlighted as future-oriented. Several WILA Bonn projects have also received awards: The projects “Creating the energy transition” and “Serena Supergreen”, which deal with career orientation in renewable energies , were named “Project Sustainability” by the German Council for Sustainable Development in 2017 . The app developed as part of the “Serena Supergreen” project also received a GIGA mouse as a family-friendly software product. The “Nature in Gray Zones” project was recognized by the UN Decade of Biological Diversity as the 2016 annual project. The "Tatort Wald" simulation game developed by WILA received the 2011 German Nature Conservation Prize .
