With about 1100 inhabitants, Wohra is the largest district in terms of population of the municipality of Wohratal in the Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf and at the same time the administrative center of the municipality. The place is about 18 km northeast of Marburg and about 4 km south of Gemünden (Wohra) on the river Wohra of the same name . In addition to the community administration, there is a primary school and a kindergarten sponsored by the Protestant parish.

history

The first mention of Wohras was in 775. The village can look back on over 1230 years of history and is one of the oldest (proven) places in the region.

Michaeliskirche

The Michaeliskirche in Wohra was built in its present form in 1782. The previous buildings can be traced back to the 8th century. This is also indicated by the patronage of the Archangel Michael , which, along with the Apostle Peter, is typical of the time of Boniface . The church was then built as a fortified church. What is left of this is the wall surrounding the churchyard. The oldest building still in existence today is the tower of Michaeliskirche, which, according to the coat of arms inscription, was built in 1510 by the Landgraves of Hesse in their function as Counts of Ziegenhain in the Gothic style.

On July 1, 1970, the municipality of Wohratal was newly formed as part of the regional reform in Hesse through the voluntary merger of the previously independent municipalities of Halsdorf and Wohra.

traffic

Wohra is connected to traffic via the state roads 3073 and 3087. The place was a stop on the Wohratalbahn , on which passenger traffic was discontinued in 1972.
