Wolfgang Bretschneider

Wolfgang Bretschneider (born August 7, 1941 in Dortmund ) is a German organist and university professor for music and liturgical studies .

Live and act

Bretschneider studied Catholic theology , philosophy , musicology and education in Bonn and Munich , at the same time he completed organ studies with Franz Lehrndorfer , Jean Langlais and Guy Bovet . In 1967 he was in Cologne Cathedral by Cardinal Josef Frings for ordained priest and worked from 1967 to 1969 as a chaplain at the Quirinus-Münster in Neuss 1969 to 1997 Repetent the Archbishop Collegium Albertinum in Bonn. He received his doctorate in musicology from Günther Massenkeil with a hymnological thesis on the hymn of the Enlightenment period.

In 1985 he was elected to the board of the Werkgemeinschaft Musik eV, where he works as a spiritual advisor. Since 1987 he has been professor of liturgy and church music at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf, since 1994 at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne and in the same function since 1977 also at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Cologne . In 1984 he was appointed to the music commission of the German Bishops' Conference . In 1992 he was appointed to the liturgy commission of the German Bishops' Conference. In 2003 he was appointed honorary professor at the theological faculty of the University of Bonn, and in 2004 he was appointed advisor for church music in the sub-commission of the German Bishops' Conference for the creation of the new prayer and hymn book . Since 2011 he has been head of the Music Advisory Board at the Guardini Foundation Berlin . He is also a member of the Church Music Working Group in the German Music Council .

Bretschneider is a subsidiary and second organist at the Bonn Minster Basilica . As an organist he gives numerous concerts at home and abroad, his main focus is French organ music of the 19th and 20th centuries. Among other things, he published the entire organ works by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger . In 1989 Wolfgang Bretschneider became President of the General Cecilia Association for Germany (ACV), which he also represents on the Central Committee of German Catholics . He is also diocesan president for the church choirs in the Archdiocese of Cologne. On September 22nd, 2018, he was adopted as active president of the General Cecilia Association and was also appointed honorary president for life.
