Wolfgang Gerok

Wolfgang Gerok (born March 27, 1926 in Tübingen ) is a German medic. He is an internist specializing in gastroenterology, hepatology and metabolic diseases.

family

Wolfgang Gerok's father Eduard Gerok was a political scientist and factory director. The mother was a daughter of the Württemberg State President Johannes von Hieber and, in addition to her son Wolfgang Gerok, had three sons and a daughter. Gerok's uncle Walter Hieber was a professor of inorganic chemistry at the Technical University in Munich.

Life

Gerok studied medicine at the universities in Tübingen and Freiburg. After completing his studies, he began his scientific training at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry and at the Pathological Institute of the University of Tübingen . He completed his clinical training in Zurich, Marburg, Tübingen and Mainz. From 1968 to 1994 he held the chair for internal medicine at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and was the medical director of the department of internal medicine II at the Medical University Clinic Freiburg, which was also headed by Georg Wilhelm Löhr.

From 1987 to 1988 he was chairman of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . From 1987 to 1995 Wolfgang Gerok was a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society .

With Paul Schölmerich and Rudolf Gross, he published a textbook on internal medicine .

Gerok played a decisive role in the further development of clinical and scientific hepatology . His main focus was the biochemistry of bile secretion and bile acid metabolism, the regulation of amino acid and protein metabolism in the liver, and the molecular biology of the hepatitis viruses .

Private

Wolfgang Gerok's marriage resulted in two daughters.
