The steam tug Woltman is a typical work ship in the historic Hamburg harbor . It was named after the Hamburg director of the electricity and shore works Reinhard Woltman . Woltman was for the Bank construction of 1814-1836 Niederelbe responsible and was also famous for an invention: The described in 1790 by his principle of the measurement of currents , "Hydrometische wings" so-called, also called after him with vanes Woltmanflügel be called, was used at the time to measure the flow velocity of a river . The tug was built by the Sachsenberg brothers' shipyard in Roßlau ad Elbe on behalf of the Hamburg shipping and port deputation as a replacement for another tug of the same name. He worked with the excavator XI on the banks of the Lower Elbe and the mouth of the Elbe and hauled the excavator barges .

The crew consisted of a captain , machinist , boatswain and two stokers . By 1976, the steamer in was Water and Shipping Authority in Cuxhaven in use, it was because of rising coal prices and the high costs of occupation from economic reasons decommissioned and sold to the Netherlands, where he repeatedly changed hands in a short time. In April 1984 the ship came back to Germany.

The ship was completely overhauled from the end of 1997 to 2004 by Jugend in Arbeit Hamburg eV and received, among other things, a new boiler.

On the evening of May 31, 2005 , the steamer caused a major fire brigade operation in the Hamburg-Övelgönne museum harbor . The reason was a strong "smoke" or steam development due to a popped leak plug from a pipeline exposed to steam. No further restoration was necessary. After simple cleaning work in the engine room, the ship was able to continue its next voyages as planned.
