YES! - Young Economic Summit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The YES! - Young Economic Summit is an annual school competition for grades 10–12 in the fields of business , politics , the environment and society .

The YES! was launched in 2015 and is a joint project of the ZBW - Leibniz Information Center for Economy and the Joachim Herz Foundation under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

idea

The YES! offers students a common platform and tools for developing solutions to economic, ecological and social problems. You take on responsibility, are the voice of the next generation and discuss the global challenges of the present and the future. The school teams are accompanied by researchers from economic and social research institutions, who support them as scientific mentors on their way.

The YES! is a project constellation that is so unique in Germany . The students decide for themselves which solutions after the YES! - Young Economic Summit should be followed up. In a democratic process, the participating students vote themselves on the best solution ideas.

Competition - process and structure

Kick-off, project work and technical discussions

The teams from the schools select a topic for their application that researchers from their region have asked. After the application phase, the project work begins with the kick-off date. The teams visit the researchers at their institutes or meet via video conference and discuss their topics together. In the following years, the teams acquire background knowledge using specialist literature and learn the basics of media and information skills through online learning paths . After a second discussion with the researchers (technical discussion), the students work in teams on a scientific basis on their possible solutions in order to be prepared for their regional finals.

Regional finals

In 2020 the five regional finals will take place in June and July . Each team presents their idea in German or English and then discusses their proposed solution with the other school teams. The participating students then vote themselves in a democratic process about which two teams should represent their region at the national finals.

The schools of the 10 teams that will then be represented at the finals will each receive prize money of 1000 euros, which they can use to pursue their ideas in consultation with their own school. In addition, two wild cards will be given to the teams in Germany that have done particularly well scientifically. These also receive the prize money.

Federal finals

The students will present the solutions they have worked out independently at the national finals. The language of the event is English throughout . In the discourse with high-ranking and international personalities from business , science , politics and civil society and other students, they not only sharpen their view of global relationships, but also experience that they not only have to be the plaything of economic reality, but can rather help shape it independently . The students themselves vote on the best solution and thus decide who will be the winner of the entire competition.

Award ceremony

The top three teams in the final will be invited to the official award ceremony in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin . In addition, the Scientific Analysis Award is given to the team with the best scientific elaboration by a scientific jury. This is also allowed to take part in the award ceremony. There they will again present their ideas for solutions to representatives of the ministry and invited guests from politics , business and civil society in order to promote their approaches to solving the urgent problems of the time .
