The Yara Birkeland is a container ship under construction . It is to be the first autonomously operated cargo ship worldwide.

history

The ship was ordered from the Norwegian shipbuilding group Vard in August 2018 . It is being built under construction number 909. The hull was built at the Vard shipyard in Brăila , Romania . The construction of the ship began with the first steel cut on December 14, 2018. The keel was laid on February 19, 2019, the launch on February 19, 2020. The hull was in April / May 2020 for completion and equipment to the Vard shipyard in Brattvåg , Norway, towed.

The ship design (type: MT 2007) comes from the Norwegian ship architecture firm Marin Teknikk. The construction costs amount to around NOK 250 million . The Norwegian state is funding the construction with its company Enova , which is supposed to support the conversion to more environmentally friendly consumption and sustainable production in the energy sector , with NOK 133 million. The name of the ship is made up of the company name Yara and the surname of one of the company's founders, Kristian Birkeland .

The project was stopped at the beginning of May 2020 until further notice due to the corona pandemic and the associated economic development.

The ship is planned for use as a feeder ship between the Yara fertilizer plant in the Herøya industrial park and the ports of Brevik and Larvik , which are around seven and 30 nautical miles away. This should save around 40,000 truck trips per year. Initially, operation with a ship's crew is planned for a transitional phase. A temporary bridge will be installed for this.

The ship has a hatch-free hold . This facilitates the automated handling of the containers . The hold is divided into four compartments and equipped with cell guides. The capacity of the ship is 120  TEU .

The ship is driven electrically by two azimuth thruster with tractor propellers, each with 900  kW power . It is equipped with two bow thrusters , each with an output of 700 kW. Accumulators with 6.8 MWh are available for the power supply  . For redundancy reasons, these are housed in four separate rooms. The accumulators should be able to be charged in at least one of the ports regularly called at.

The ship will be equipped with an automatic mooring system in ports. The transport chain from the factory to the ship, including loading the ship, is also to be automated.

Awards

The marine architecture firm Marin Teknikk was awarded the award for the “Green Innovation of the Year” (Årets grønne innovasjon) in October 2018 during an industrial design conference in Giske .

Yara International and the Kongsberg Group were awarded the Climate Prize 2018 by the Zero Environmental Foundation for the development of the first emission-free and autonomous container ship in November 2018 and the Green Award 2019 at the Greentech Festival in Berlin in March 2019 .
