Yasemin is a multi-award-winning German feature film from 1988 by Hark Bohm with Ayşe Romey and Uwe Bohm in the leading roles. It is considered a modern classic of children's and youth films .
Emergence
Extensive research by the filmmaker Bohm preceded the writing and staging of the film. He spoke to Turkish families in Germany, took part in their festivals and studied in detail the conflict between these “tightrope walkers between two cultures” (Lüdecke) in order to be able to depict the Turks in the film as differentiated as possible.
content
The film makes it clear that where cultures as different as German and Turkish collide, even perfect language skills can be pointless as long as there is no effort to achieve mutual intercultural understanding . It tells the love story between 17-year-old Yasemin, daughter of a Turkish immigrant in Germany, and Jan, a 20-year-old student from Hamburg-Altona who cares for a relaxed life . Her national origins had never played a special role in the life of the high school student. Due to the naive, but soon serious relationship between the hardworking pupil and the student, as this is not hidden from her family, she has to take note of her Turkish origin for the first time in an unpleasant way for her. Yasemin's father in particular, a hard-working greengrocer, cannot reconcile the lovers' relationships with the norms he had at the time: he plans to move his daughter, who was born and raised in Germany, to Turkey in order to finally end the relationship with the German. Yasemin and Jan respond at the last moment by fleeing. The emotionally very impressive final scene of the film leaves her further fate open.
criticism
- film-dienst : The film touches on essential problems of understanding between Turkish children who grew up in Germany and their parents. It is told in the style of an exciting, occasionally touching film story and stimulates discussion.
- epd Film 5/1988: … a fresh and enjoyable story told in which the foreigners do not have to appear in their role as a “fringe group”.
