Ordnance Survey map sheet from 1961

The Yell Sound is an area of about Scotland belonging archipelago of Shetland located strait . It belongs to the south-east of the North Sea and connects it with the North Atlantic in the north-west. At the same time it separates Mainland , the main island of the Shetlands, in the south and west from the island of Yell in the northeast.

The northern border, where the Yell Sound merges into the North Atlantic, runs from the Point of Fethaland in a straight line east to the west coast of Yell. This also corresponds to the line drawn by the International Hydrographic Organization to demarcate the two seas.

In the northern part of the Yell Sound is up to seven kilometers wide and has only a few smaller islands, mostly near the coast. In the middle part it widens by about one kilometer, here branches off to the southwest, Sullom Voe , an elongated bay ( inlet ). The Yell Sound continues to the southeast, in this area there are several larger islands, of which Bigga and Samphrey divide the strait into two arms, each one kilometer wide. To the south-east of this, the Yell Sound branches again: one arm leads south to the interior of Mainland, where it runs out in three further inlets, Dales Voe , Colla Firth and Swining Voe . To the east it opens to the North Sea, the border runs from Burra Ness in the south of Yell to the northern tip of the Lunna Ness peninsula on Mainland.

In the northern part the coast is unpopulated. Here, on the Kame of Isbister and on Birrier , there are structural remains designated as Scheduled Monuments , which it is assumed that Irish Scottish monks in the early Middle Ages explicitly sought the seclusion of the area for their settlement. The northernmost settlement is North Roe on Burra Voe on Northmavine , a peninsula of Mainland. To the south there are other villages, also mostly in the sheltered position of a bay, such as Collafirth with its small harbor in the Voe of the Brig or Ollaberry . There is a ferry between the ports of Toft (formerly Mossbank ) and Ulsta . Since the construction of the loading terminal on Sullom Voe, the Yell Sound has been increasingly used by oil tankers. There are, with exceptions, the obligation to take on pilots for the area between the lighthouses on Fethaland in the north and on Firths Voe in the south.

Parts of the coastal areas of the Yells Sound are designated as nature and landscape protection areas on different legal bases. The largest is Yell Sound Coast , a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and also an FFH area (SAC). Others are the SSSI The Ayres of Swinister and Graveland . Otterswick and Graveland is also a SAC, Yell Sound also has a share in the SAC Sullom Voe with the bays Gluss Voe and Orka Voe . The coastal area along Fethaland and Isle of Fethaland is both in the SSSI Uyea - North Roe Coast and in the single conservation area ( National Scenic Area ) in the Shetlands.

It's about 24 kilometers as the crow flies from the north to the south-east. Without the four inlets mentioned, the Yell Sound covers an area of 171.32 square kilometers, its water code number is 200503.
