The Pole Karol Hoffmann, who was still vice European champion in 2016 , was without a valid jump this time

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 16.75 m. Since only three jumpers exceeded this distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best jumpers from both groups - highlighted in light green - to a total of twelve participants. So finally 16.41 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

final

August 12, 2018, 7:55 p.m. CEST

The two first-placed winners of the 2016 European Athletics Championships, Max Heß from Germany and Karol Hoffmann, got stuck in the qualification - partly due to injury-related training deficits. The favorite was primarily the Portuguese Nelson Évora, third in the 2015 and 2017 World Cup . His fiercest rival was former Cuban Alexis Copello, who now started for Azerbaijan. This had taken fifth place at the 2017 World Championships. Other candidates for top places were the launching under a neutral flag Russian Alexei Fyodorov as EM -Dritter of 2014 and EM -Vierter of 2012 , the Romanian EM -Fünfte of 2014 Marian Oprea and the Italian European champion Fabrizio Donato of 2012. However, Fyodorov was also eliminated in the qualification.

The level of this competition could not match the results of previous years at major international championships. In the entire course, the 17-meter mark was exceeded only once.

After the first round, Copello was leading with 16.78 m in front of Briton Nathan Douglas with 16.71 m. In lap two, Copello extended his lead with a jump to 16.93 m. The Spaniard Pablo Torrijos came third with 16.65 m. In lap three Évora reached 16.86 m, which he was now second. The Greek Dimitrios Tsiamis scored 16.86 m and finished third in front of Torrijos, who increased to 16.74 m.

In the first round of the final Évora improved by an inch, the ranking remained unaffected. Nelson Évora took the lead with his fifth jump. He had achieved 17.10 m and thus won the competition. Not much happened in the following ranks either. Alexis Copello won silver ahead of Dimitrios Tsiamis. Nazim Babayev improved to fourth place on his last attempt. His 16.76 m put him two inches ahead of Pablo Torrijos. Nathan Douglas finished sixth.
