Yomitan ( Jap. 読谷村 , -son ) is a village community in the district Nakagami of the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa .
geography
Yomitan is located in the western, central part of the island of Okinawa Hontō and extends over the peninsula of the Zampa Cape ( 残 波 岬 , -misaki ). The village of Onna borders in the north, the city of Okinawa in the northeast , the city of Kadena in the east and south and the East China Sea in the west .
history
The area over which today's municipality extends was originally called Ufunishi for "great north", as it was in the north of the central Ryūkyū kingdom of Chūzan . In the collection of poems Omoro Sōshi it appears as Yontamoza or Yontamuza , which later became Yuntanja ( 読 谷 山 , also called Yuntanza ), which was an administrative region ( majiri ) in Chūzan. This region consisted of 25 villages around 1611, with 9 villages ceded to Onna in 1673.
These 16 villages - Furugen ( 古 堅 ), Gima ( 儀 間 ), Hija ( 比 謝 ), Iramina ( 伊 良 皆 ), Kina ( 喜 名 ), Nagahama ( 長 浜 ), Namihira ( 波 平 ), Ōwan ( 大 湾 ), Senaha ( 瀬 名 波 ) , Sobe ( 楚 辺 ), Takashiho ( 高志 保 ), Toguchi ( 渡 具 知 ), Tokeshi ( 渡 慶 次 ), Uechi ( 上 地 ), Uza ( 宇 座 ) and Zakimi ( 座 喜 味 ), as well as Makihara ( 牧 原 ), Nagata ( 長 田 ) and Oyashi ( 親 志 ) which were previously separated from Ōwan, Iramina and Kina - were merged in 1908 to form the municipality of Yuntanja ( 読 谷 山村 , -son ). Together with the later Hijabashi ( 比 謝 矼 ; 1914), Ōki ( 大 木 ; 1935) and Toya ( 都 屋 ; 1946), these form the 22 districts ( aza ) of the municipality.
In the Battle of Okinawa in World War II in April 1945, Yuntanja was one of the Allied landing sites.
In 1946 the name was changed from Yuntanja to Yomitan.
After the war, the US military took over the Japanese military facilities and expanded them so that before Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972, about 73% of the municipal area was US military territory. In 1997, the US Air Force's Senaha Communication Station ( 瀬 名 波 通信 施 設 , Senaha tsūshin shisetsu ; 61 ha) , the Sobe Communication Site ( 楚 辺 通信 所 , Sobe tsūshinjo ; 54 ha) with a Wullenwever antenna (dismantled in 2007) of the US Navy , the Yomitan Auxiliary Airfield ( 読 谷 補助 飛行 場 , Yomitan hojo hikōjō ; 191 ha) of the US Marine Corps , part of the Kadena Ammunition Storage Area ( 嘉 手 納 弾 薬 庫 地区 , Kadena dan'yakuko chiku ; 1066 ha) of the US Air Force and the Torii Communication Station ( ト リ イ 通信 施 設 , Torii tsūshin shisetsu ; 194 ha) of the US Army . The former three were returned to the community in 2006, so that 35.9% (12.62 km²) of the community area has been under US military administration since then.
