You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet is a rock song by the Canadian band Bachman-Turner Overdrive from 1974. The title became a top 10 success internationally and was number one on the American Billboard Hot 100 and in early 1975 the German single charts . The lyrics and music of the song are by Randy Bachman , who also produced it.

Emergence

According to Randy Bachman, the song was created as a pure improvisation song and "joke song" for the band and as a test song for the microphone and recording settings for the album Not Fragile in the studio. It was not originally planned for publication, but the dynamics of the guitars made it suitable as a test song. During the recordings, no attention was paid to optimizing the song or even setting the instruments correctly. The melody and the intro were inspired by the song "Only You Know and I Know" by Dave Mason .

When the album was presented on Mercury Records , it was not played. The head of the record company, Charlie Fach, found none of the eight planned titles with a hit factor. With Bachman's approval, the technician then played the test song and Fach was enthusiastic. He wanted to include it on the album exactly as it was recorded.

Text and music

Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1991)

The lyrics describe how the singer meets a "devil woman" and she seduces him. Like the music, the lyrics have been improvised, resulting in various nonsensical sentences. The refrain text "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", a slang expression, is grammatically incorrect as a double negative. Even sentences like "She took me to her doctor and he told me of a cure" say nothing according to the band, although they led to rumors that the song was about herpes or another sexually transmitted disease .

You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet is also one of the few well-known rock songs that stutters . Randy Bachman sings “Bbb-baby, you just ain't seen nn-nothin 'yet” several times in the chorus. According to Bachman, he had embedded the stuttering phrases in the chorus just for fun and sent the recording to his brother Gary, who was stuttering . He also played a version without a stutter, which was considered less successful by the record company.

Publication and response

The song was released on September 9, 1974 on Mercury Records as a single , on the B-side the song Free Wheelin 'was recorded:

  1. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - 3:31
  2. Free Wheelin ' - 3:44

Both songs appeared in September 1974 on the album Not Fragile , which was the only album of the band to reach number one in the US album charts .

Cover versions

You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet has been re-released or covered by several bands and musicians. Usually the original song was reinterpreted. However, there are also some, mainly German, variants in which a new text was added to the music of You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet , sometimes in a corrupted way like the version by Guildo Horn (I'm not too fat) or the Spider Murphy Gang (go zoag ma do this thing) . Some interpretations put the song together with other rock songs for compilations and mixes, for example James Last as early as 1975 in his series Nonstop Disco Dancing or more modern projects like Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers as Medley Rock the Party . The bands and performers who released the song in a cover version include: u. a.
