Yukiyo Shintani ( Japanese 新 谷 起 世 , Shintani Yukiyo ; born January 18, 1985 in Mima ) is a Japanese grass skier . So far she has won three medals at world championships and six world cup races and in 2010 she finished second in the overall world cup.

Career

Yukiyo Shintani is from Mima and lives in Machida . She is the older sister of the grass skier Daichi Shintani . Their first major international event was the 2005 Junior World Championship in Nové Město na Moravě . The then 20-year-old won two bronze medals in slalom and in combination. She finished sixth in the giant slalom and seventh in the Super-G. Six weeks later, she also took part in the 2005 World Cup in Dizin . Here she reached sixth place in the slalom, the giant slalom and in the combination as well as eighth place in the Super-G. Shortly afterwards she won two FIS races in Japan .

In August 2006 Shintani contested their first and this year only World Cup races . In the Czech town of České Petrovice she was fifth in slalom and fifth in giant slalom, which brought her to eleventh place in the 2006 season in the overall World Cup. In 2007 Shintani won a total of four FIS races in Japan and also achieved several podium places in FIS competitions in Europe. She did not take part in World Cup races this season. A great success she achieved at the 2007 World Cup in Olešnice v Orlických horách . With second place in the slalom behind the Swiss Nadja Vogel , she was the first Japanese woman and also the first non-European woman to win a medal at the grass ski world championships . She was fifth in the super combined and ninth in the super G, but she did not finish in the giant slalom. In the 2008 season Shintani took part in the World Cup races in Rettenbach and Dizin . She reached seventh place in the super combination of Rettenbach and fourth place in Dizin's super-G and thus came tenth in the overall World Cup. At FIS races she won the slaloms in Urnäsch and Rettenbach as well as five competitions in Japan.

In the 2009 season Shintani competed in five World Cup races and celebrated three wins. She managed the first on July 4th in the slalom in Čenkovice , the next two in Maria Gugging at the end of August . There she won the giant slalom at the same time as the Austrian Jacqueline Gerlach and the next day also the slalom. In addition, there was a sixth place in the super combined from Wilhelmsburg , but also a failure in the second slalom from Čenkovice. In the overall World Cup, she reached fifth place. At the 2009 World Championships in Rettenbach, Shintani won the bronze medal in the Super-G and was tenth in the giant slalom. In the slalom and in the super combination, she did not finish. In the 2010 season Shintani took part in all eleven World Cup races. She won the slaloms in Faistenau and Frais-Chiomonte , was second in the Super Combined in Goldingen and in the giant slalom in Dizin and third in the Super G in Cesana San Sicario . With that she finished second in the overall World Cup behind the German Anna-Lena Büdenbender and ahead of the Austrian Ingrid Hirschhofer . In June 2010 she won the FIS Super G in Rettenbach, and at the end of the season at the beginning of October she won the two FIS races in Japan.

At the 2011 World Championships in Goldingen , Shintani won the silver medal in the Super-G. She also came fourth in the giant slalom. In the super combination, in which she led after the first round, she was eliminated as well as in the slalom in the second round. She did not take part in World Cup races in the 2011 season. In addition to the World Championship, she only contested the four FIS races in Japan, of which she won three. In the 2012 season Shintani took part in FIS races in Japan and four World Cup races in Europe. She finished on the podium in all races and celebrated her sixth World Cup victory on July 8 in the slalom in Předklášteří . So she finished seventh in the overall World Cup.
