Zézé Gamboa

José Augusto Octávio Gamboa dos Passos , or Zézé Gamboa for short (born October 31, 1955 in Luanda ) is an Angolan film director and sound engineer.

Life

Between 1974 and 1980 he directed the news programs on Angolan television . He then went to study in Paris, where he obtained his diploma as a sound engineer in 1984 . He has since worked as a sound engineer, especially in Portuguese film . At the same time he began directing himself, for the first time in 1988 with his documentary short film Mopiopio .

After further short films, O Herói became Gamboa's first full-length feature film in 2004. Based on a war veteran in Luanda, the work deals with the physical and psychological injuries suffered by people and their difficult living conditions in Angola after the end of the Angolan civil war (1975–2002). The film has won a number of awards including the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival , the Audience Prize at the Nantes Three Continents Festival in Nantes , and the Best Picture Prize at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles .

Since then, Gamboa has been one of the most important names in the emerging Angolan cinema .

His 2012 film O Grande Kilapy has screened at various film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival , the Dubai International Film Festival in Dubai and the London Film Festival . He also won awards at Portuguese festivals, such as the Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra (Best Costumes) and FESTin , the festival of films in the Portuguese-speaking region in Lisbon (Best Actor). He was also nominated for two film awards in Portugal, the Globo de Ouro and the Sophia Awards .
