Salman Shazar
Salman Shazar ( Hebrew זלמן שז"ר, also Shneur Zalman Shazar , born as Schneiur Salman Rubaschow ; born on October 6, 1889 in Mir near Minsk , Russian Empire ; died October 5, 1974 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli politician and the third President of Israel from 1963 to 1973 .
His initials SchSR later formed his Hebrew name.
Life
Shazar grew up in a Hasidic family, from which he turned away. At the age of 18 he spent two months in a Russian prison because of his work for the Zionist organization Poalei Zion . He studied Jewish history in Saint Petersburg , Strasbourg and Switzerland and from 1912 in Berlin, his interest was primarily the history of the Jews in Eastern Europe, but also the criticism of the Bible . He worked for the journal Der Jude , published by Martin Buber , and also wrote for Yiddish newspapers in Russia, the United States and for the Jüdische Rundschau .
In 1924, Sharar emigrated to Palestine. He was one of the co-founders of the Mapai and worked as an editor for the Histadrut -Latt Davar (1944 editor-in-chief). He also continued to work as an author of poems, essays, autobiographical novels, biographies and academic texts. His main scientific work was a history of biblical criticism together with M. Soloweitschik. In 1947 he was a member of the Jewish Agency's delegation to the UN negotiations and was instrumental in the creation of the Israeli declaration of independence .
Shazar became a member of the first Knesset in 1949 (until 1963) and was Minister of Education in 1949 and 1950. From 1963 to 1973 he was finally the third President of Israel.
In 1966 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . In 1968 he received an honorary doctorate from Bar Ilan University .
