The Zangengraben is an orographic left tributary of the Odenbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Kusel, in the area of ​​the local community of Hefersweiler, which is part of the Lauterecken-Wolfstein association .

The Zangengraben rises in the natural area of Moschelhöhen in the North Palatinate Bergland at an altitude of 350  m above sea level. NHN at the eastern foot of the Bauerschiederberg ( 398.8  m ) and a good one and a half kilometers west of the village of Hefersweiler. Its source is in a deciduous forest directly east of the border with Relsberg within the district of Hefersweiler.

The stream initially flows a good three hundred and fifty meters in an east-northeast direction between the hill Gründling ( 363.9  m ) on its right and the eastern spur of the Bauerschiederberg called Breitwiesenberg on the left through a deep Kerbtal and is then fed by a forest brook on its left . Two hundred and fifty meters down the stream the Zangengraben leaves the forest and enters the open corridor. It now initially runs through the meadows and fields of the Löschbach corridor, followed by sparse trees and then along the northeastern edge of the Ahlbornerhof residential area belonging to Hefersweiler .

It then passes the boundary between Hefersweiler and its district Berzweiler and finally flows into the Odenbach coming from the south at the Ahlbornwiesen corridor at a height of about 216  m .

The Zangengraben has a catchment area of ​​1.134 km² and drains via the Odenbach , Glan , Nahe and Rhine into the North Sea . The difference in altitude from its source to its mouth is 134 m, which corresponds to a mean bed gradient of 78.3 ‰ over a run length of 1.712 km.

nature and environment

The deep Kerbtal of the Zangengraben is shaped in the source area by canyon forest with rock. Broken willows , ash trees , black alder and sycamore maples as well as blackberry , red currant and hazelnut bushes grow there . Below in the herb layer the wood sorrel , the Gundermann , the stinkhorn , the great witch's herb , the mountain gold and the great nettle , as well as the common worm , the thorny shield and the lady fern thrive .
