The time of the fish is a "poetic post-punk fairy tale" or the first feature film by the director Heiko Aufdermauer , who wrote the script together with Dirk Laucke . It was made in coproduction with Luna-Film, Berlin, production management: Cathleen Hoffmann.

content

Time of the fish deals with the situation of young people in a prefabricated housing estate away from the metropolises in Halle-Neustadt , which is characterized by unemployment and precarious living conditions. It is about building love relationships and friendships, mutual dependency and the liberation from it, conflicts between young people and with authorities. The young protagonists act in the field of tension between adult expectations and their own ideas about life. The film very clearly represents a social point of view. In his film, Heiko Aufdermauer deals with the questions of what it is worth fighting, living and working for. He states the impossibility and simultaneous necessity of utopia in places like Halle-Neustadt. Each of the film characters finds a different answer to the question: "How do I want to live and in which society?"

19-year-old Robert falls in love with the mysterious Jana of the same age. She lives in a symbiosis and mutual dependency with her older brother Clemens in an abandoned kindergarten - the two are homeless. Robert invites Jana to perform as a punk-singer-songwriter. His mother tries very hard to get a job at a used car dealer for Robert. However, this work does not correspond to his values, he quits it and prefers to make music instead. Approaching Jana is difficult. Brother Clemens is always there. He is very aggressive and is often the victim of fights. Robert's single mother, who otherwise has an unconventional lifestyle, takes on a precarious job as a bartender in the Havana Bar . She gets along with Robert increasingly poorly, especially after Clemens and Jana visited Robert to bathe and the household budget has disappeared.

Cinematic design language

The film is a youth drama that, with its realism and formal language, is close to films from the Berlin school . However, the director of Zeit der Fisch differentiates his film from the Berlin School through its social positioning and political statements, in whose films, according to Heiko Aufdermauer, politics is only encoded and played out in a private setting. The cinematic language is characterized by long camera positions that illustrate the sadness of the protagonists' lives.

occupation

The film is cast in the main roles with Janusz Kocaj as the punk Robert Neumann, Kim Schnitzer as Jana, Christian Blümel as Clemens, Jana's brother, and Steffi Kühnert as Anna Neumann, Robert's mother. Other roles played Joachim Lätsch as host, Manfred Möck as car dealer, Marie Gruber as Ms. Pockrandt, Klaus Rätsch as Mr. Pockrandt, Michael Wiesner as Matze, Jakob Bieber as Hannes and Herrmann Scheithauer as a gang member. Originally, the Halle punk musician Timm Völker was supposed to play the role of Robert, who was also the model for the character of Robert, but after the first rehearsals the director decided on the professional actor Janusz Kocaj.

Soundtrack

Creativity in the form of playing guitar and singing or writing punk songs play a major regulating role for the main character. This is strongly emphasized by the use of songs by independent , punk and postpunk bands 206 , Timm & the Busy Men and Mathias Petsche. The expressive German texts of the film music are often linked directly to dialogues between the film characters or are directly linked to them. The music is given an additional narrative function within the film or continues the linguistic and cinematic narration on a musical level. The film's soundtrack was released on CD. 206 are Timm Völker, Friedemann Clauß, Frithjof Rehahn and Florian Drews. Timm & the Busy Men are Timm Völker, Florian Drews, Leif Ziemann and Konradt Wüstemann. Mathias Petsche is a film musician.
