The Zeller Ache is a brook in the Mondseeland in Upper Austria . It drains the Irrsee to the south-east and around 70 m lower lying Mondsee . After the Fuschler Ache , it is the most important tributary of the Mondsee. It takes its name from the Irrsee, which is also called Zeller See after the town of Zell am Moos .

Run and landscape

The Zeller Ache (bottom left) as an outflow from the Irrsee

The Zeller Ache leaves the Irrsee at its southeastern end in a reed area and initially runs in a curved course through wet meadows in the silting area of the Irrsee. Also on the further stretch it shows a meandering , structure-rich course and flows in a deep bed with low flow speed.

In the lower reaches, the stream bed is often straightened and narrowed. Shortly before Mondsee, the Zeller Ache flows through the Helenental , a natural, wooded area with a higher gradient. The last section runs through the local area of Mondsee, where the stream is tightly regulated and the river bed is partially completely paved. At the Alpenseebad Mondsee the Ache flows into the Mondsee. The estuary used to be about 250 m further west, it was relocated in the course of straightening.

The wide valley through which the Zeller Ache runs is bordered by the Kolomansberg  ( 1114  m above sea level ) in the west and Lackenberg  ( 925  m above sea level ) and Mondseeberg  ( 1029  m above sea level ) in the east. In the upper area the valley has an average gradient of 3 ‰, the last quarter slopes rapidly towards the Mondsee with a gradient of 50 ‰.

Use and nature

The water of the Zeller Ache was and is used for energy in mills and small power plants. 19 transverse structures, many of them unused today, and several diversion stretches impair the natural course of the river. The Erlachmühle , first mentioned in 1416, is the last flour mill in operation in Mondseeland.

The Zeller Ache is visited by numerous fish species from the Mondsee for spawning . Among the most common fish species include Seelaube , Rußnase , chub , rutilus meidingerii , hazel and perch .

The water quality class is I (as of 2005).
