Zgonc [ t͡s'ɡɔnt͡s ] is an Austrian specialist retail chain for tools, machines, construction and gardening equipment.

history

Today's company Zgonc goes back to the small parental business, a shop for tools and machines, in Hahngasse 33 in the 9th  district of Vienna . In this small business, Peter Zgonc received his training as a wholesale merchant, which for him became the basis for the expansion of his parents' business.

In 1957, Zgonc opened its first branch in St. Pölten . From 1975 the first additional branches followed in Leonding , St. Andrä-Wölker and 1979 in Gerasdorf . In the same year, a new house was built next to the Sankt Marx autobahn exit in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstrasse , in which the central warehouse and administration were housed in addition to the sales area. On September 7, 1983, the company was converted into a GmbH and traded under the name of Zgonc Handelsgesellschaft mbH, with its headquarters in Vienna, at Modecenterstraße 3 .

The company expanded in the course of the following years, especially in the greater Vienna area, in Lower and Upper Austria and in Styria. Branches that had become too small were closed and reopened in other locations. On December 31, 2005, the company was renamed ZGONC Handel GmbH , the company is 100% owned by the Peter Zgonc Private Foundation, and in 2017 more than 350 people were employed. On September 25, 2008 , the first branch in Carinthia was opened on Klagenfurter Südring, near Völkermarkter Straße, making it the 16th branch in total. The next Carinthian branch was opened in Villach on November 25, 2010 . Peter Zgonc died on October 24, 2017 at the age of 78.

Since 2012, the company has been expanding its branch network by setting up a new chain of shops, which differs from the previous large branches through a more specialized range. The first of these shops opened on May 24, 2012 in Eisenstadt . This was followed by openings in Oberwart , Mühldorf bei Feldbach , Liezen , Gralla and Vöcklabruck . There has been a shop in Amstetten since April 2015 , Neusiedl am See followed in March 2016, Ansfelden and Braunau am Inn in 2017 . Shops opened in Horn , Deutschlandsberg and Zwettl in 2018, shops in Mistelbach , Wolfsberg , Salzburg and Spittal in 2019 , and Voitsberg in 2020 . Thus, in 2019 Zgonc has a total of 17 branches and 18 shops as well as machine rentals in Vienna and in Brunn am Gebirge .

Goods are imported from Italy and Germany , the USA and the Far East . With the labels "Yellow ProfiLine" and "Yellow GardenLine", the company has two own brands in the entry-level price segment.

advertising

The company is known for its intensive advertising, which is always carried out both through regular direct mail and on the radio. The saying, which has remained unchanged for many years , is known: " If he can only take it, the Zgonc" , like the following, even more well-known suffix: "Raunz 'ned, buy!" . These two sayings are often used as synonyms for feigned or ironic pity and have thus already established themselves as a phrase. The advertising slogan that had previously been made by Chancellor Schüssel was also repeated in a parliamentary speech . In 2006, Zgonc was ranked fourth in Austria in the advertising effectiveness study of its competitor BauMax . Since 2014 there has been a cooperation with the former ski racer and ORF commentator Hans Knauß , who appears as a spokesman in radio spots and acts as a brand ambassador.
