Zhongzheng ( Chinese 中正 區 , Pinyin Zhōngzhèng Qū ; alternative spellings Jhongjheng and Chungcheng ) is a district in southwest Taipei with about 160,000 inhabitants and an area of 7.6 square kilometers. It got its name from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall located there ( Chiang Kai-shek is also posthumously called Zhongzheng in Chinese ). There are also many government buildings located in Zhongzheng, such as the Presidential Palace and Executive Yuan , Control Yuan , Legislative Yuan, and Justice Yuan . It is also home to Taipei Central Station . Historically, most of the ancient Qing-era city of Taipei was in the area of Zhongzheng . Zhongzheng is also home to most of Taipei's museums.
Zhongzheng borders the districts of Wanhua , Datong , Zhongshan , Da'an and Wenshan of Taipei and Yonghe of New Taipei .
history
During the Qing Dynasty, most of the ancient city of Taipei was in the area of the district. In 1990 the district was merged from the two districts Chengzhong ( 城中 區 , Chéngzhōng Qū ) and Guting ( 古亭 區 , Gǔtíng Qū ), and named after the Chiang Kai-shek memorial hall there.
