history

Zuriaake was founded in 1998 by Bloodsea and Bloodfire in Jinan , the capital of Shandong Province . The band has been completed by Deadsphere since 2004. Not much is known about the history of the band. According to an article in the South China Morning Post , the group is considered to be one of the longest-running metal bands in the country.

After signing with the Chinese metal label Black Happiness Production , which is the country's first music label specializing in Black Metal , the group produced the Split Autumn of Sad Ode - Siming of Loulan with Yn Gizarm , another Bloodfire music project. After Zuriaake switched to Pest Productions in 2006 , the band's first studio album, Afterimage of Autumn , was released a year later . In 2015 an EP was released with Gu Yan , which was reissued as an album with additional titles in the course of the same year. The long period of musical inactivity between the two studio albums Afterimage of Autumn and Gu Yan was among other things a stay abroad Blood Fires in Germany founded, where he From 2008 to 2012 in Berlin a study completed.

In May 2017 the band played their debut concert on European soil at the Steelfest Open Air in Finland . music

The musicians play traditional black metal with musical Chinese influences. In an interview, Bloodfire stated that they chose Black Metal because no other genre of Metal could express what the musicians wanted to say. Black Metal has a unique philosophical temperament with its views on humanity and nature , polytheism and ancestor worship , which suits the band. In addition to the classic instruments for Black Metal, wooden fish , handbells and a Xun can be found in the quiet passages , which are recorded by guest musicians during album productions and recorded as samples at concerts. In addition, the guitars produce a traditional sound in the calm and melodic passages. Occasionally, Zuriaake's songs reach a length of more than 20 minutes. In an interview from 2018, Bloodfire named bands such as Mayhem , Bathory , Burzum , Abigor and Candlemass as musical references .

The musicians are lyrically inspired by traditional, folkloric Chinese poems and take up old legends, myths and Chinese mythology . In addition, the period from 771 BC is used. Chr to 221 BC Chr. ( " Time of the Warring States " ) as a source of inspiration, since the published works at this time had an emotional intensity and desperation that fit the aesthetics of Black Metal. Due to lack of spread of Christianity in modern China, where a kind of communist atheism to Buddhism and Daoism have largely replaced, it made no sense satanic to sing or anti-Christian themes. Instead, the musicians focus on the philosophy and history of China.

Occur

Fog machines are increasingly used when the band performs . The musicians, with the exception of the drummer, wear black Han clothing and traditional-looking peasant hats ( dǒulì ) at their concerts , which cover their faces and are supposed to conjure up an image of an old Chinese fisherman. These in turn are based on the poem Jiang Xue . The microphones are decorated with traditional lanterns and branches. The musicians refrain from wearing corpse paint at their concerts , as Chinese viewers find it more amusing than frightening. After each song played, the musicians bow to their audience and show traditional hand gestures to thank the audience.

More music projects

There is hardly any information about the musicians. Bloodfire is also active with its own music project called Yn Gizarm . Zuriaake's members also founded the atmospheric black metal / dungeon synth project Demogorgon with the musicians of the groups Holyarrow and Destruction of Redemption . In November 2020 the band members founded the musical side project Hellward , which plays a mixture of black metal and heavy metal .

Band name

The Chinese band name葬 尸 湖 - "Lake of Buried Corpses" is a metaphor for the poet Qu Yuan , who drowned himself out of hatred of the government. English- speaking media refer to Zuriaake as the Chinglish suitcase word . In a Chinese-language interview from 2016, the musicians replied that the name was derived from a sequence of Zu (a wind-rain deity), burial and lake and that it should look "German".
