.be is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Belgium . It has existed since August 5th, 1988 and has been managed by the non-profit company DNS Belgium since 1999 .

properties

Any natural or legal person can register a .be domain, there are no special restrictions. A residence or a branch in Belgium is not necessary. The assignment is completely automated and takes up to two days. Initially only alphanumeric characters were supported, from June 2013 special characters and umlauts such as Ä, Ö and Ü can also be used. The fees for .be domains are calculated annually in advance. It is unusual that for a short time until January 2006 a domain could be registered free of charge.

In the event of disputes, parties can call on the arbitration service , with DNS Belgium since 2008 dividing the fees equally between the applicant and the opponent. First of all, the complainant has to spend the full amount, but if successful, receives half of it back. The division was introduced to make the ccTLD as unattractive as possible for domain grabbers .

particularities

Since May 8, 2012, the registry DNS BE has been offering every owner of a .be domain the opportunity to obtain a personalized digital certificate for their domain. This contains all the data of the owner of the respective domain, so in addition to name and address z. B. also his e-mail address .

In Switzerland , .be is also used by people and organizations related to the Canton of Bern (abbreviation BE ).

In February 2013, .be was attacked as part of a distributed denial of service , as was SWITCH and its ccTLD .ch . Experts rated the security of the domain as stable. A few months later, however, hackers gained access to DNS BE's systems and even changed their homepage .

The registry DNS Belgium has been offering a tool since 2008 with which the availability of various services on .be domains can be checked.
