.bg is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bulgaria . It has existed since January 3, 1995 and is administered by the local company Register.BG .

Award criteria

By September 2008, interested parties had to explain in detail why they were entitled to obtain a .bg domain. After that, the procedure was reversed, following the example of other endings, so that the owner bears the sole risk of infringing the (trademark) rights of third parties.

All citizens of Bulgaria, foreigners with a permanent residence permit in Bulgaria and all other citizens and companies in the EU are now allowed to apply for a .bg address. Anyone who does not have a permanent location in the European Union is encouraged to name an administrative contact person based in the EU. The chosen domain name must be identical to the name of the company. Both second and third level registrations are accepted.

All documents required for registering a domain must be in Bulgarian or English, or a certified copy of one of these two languages. When registering, you must provide your ID card or VAT number and an application form.

internationalization

A .bg domain can be between three and 63 characters long. For some time now, the registry has been trying to create an internationalized top-level domain, but ICANN keeps blocking it. There is concern that the top-level domain in Cyrillic (.бг) could be confused with the top-level domain .br .

The application to allow Cyrillic characters for .bg was submitted at the end of 2008 as part of ICANN's so-called fast-track process . The registry intended to defend itself legally against the negative decision on the IDN, but received no corresponding inspection of the files of the application from ICANN. Iwajlo Kalfin , member of the European Parliament , in turn blamed the problems of the government of his country, which was not capable of any constructive dialogue with ICANN.

In December 2011, ICANN emphasized again that Bulgaria would have to look for a different ending in order to be able to introduce internationalized domain names . The rejection for .bg is final and irrevocable.
