.me is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) of Montenegro , which was created in the course of the country's independence from Serbia and Montenegro on September 24, 2007 , and from July 2008 the previously used top-level domain .yu ( Yugoslavia ) replaced. It was initially administered directly by the Montenegrin government.

The company doMEn , a company based in Montenegro consortium Irish resident registration company to its partners Afilias and the registrar Go Daddy and the Montenegrin company ME-net belong, were selected as the new operator of the TLD. Together they operate under the Internet address domain.me . In September 2012, dotMe became known to a wider public because of a commercial in the USA under the motto “You're not a corporation. You are a person. Get the right web address. ”Was broadcast.

This means that .me is used similarly to B. the top-level domains .tv and .io . Instead of creating a local reference to the respective country, these endings are often used according to their linguistic meaning.

properties

Registrations are made at both the second and third levels. While addresses like co.me, net.me, org.me, its.me or priv.me on the third level are reserved for citizens and companies of Montenegro, anyone worldwide can register an address on the second level. In total, an .me domain can be between three and 63 characters long; special characters based on the IDN procedure are currently not possible. The connection of an address usually takes two working days and is fully automated.

The use of popular first and last names in .me domains was initially not possible after the introduction. It was not until April 2010 that dotME auctioned addresses such as kevin.me or paul.me together with NameJet as part of an auction .

In March 2010 there were already 320,000, making the .me domain the fastest-selling TLD of all time.
