.gb is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United Kingdom . It has existed since July 1985 and is managed by JANET .

Although GB is the abbreviation for the United Kingdom according to ISO 3166-1 , UK was used as the abbreviation before the Internet existed , so .uk was able to establish itself. The top-level domain .gb was only used by a few government websites and for emails based on the X.400 standard. After the use of X.400 was practically discontinued, all government pages gradually disappeared. The last remaining, albeit unused address .gb at the time, was dra.hmg.gb , which belonged to the British Defense Research Agency . Today, however, this website is no longer accessible either.
